Inside the motel room, Evelyn finally reached for the small mahogany box resting at the bottom of her duffel bag. She retrieved a small, silver key from the lining of her coat pocket, inserted it into the brass lock, and turned it with a soft click. The lid lifted to reveal a stack of yellowed letters, a certified birth certificate, and a bank ledger dating back to the late nineteen-nineties. These were the physical relics of a sacrifice Clara was too blind to see.
Evelyn picked up the topmost letter, its ink slightly faded by time. It was addressed to her late husband, Thomas, written during a period of severe financial distress when the family business collapsed under mounting debts.
