Chapter 9: The Trap Springs Shut

Before Marcus could process the staggering weight of Jane’s confession, a sharp, metallic screech echoed through the subterranean parking garage. The heavy pedestrian door at the top of the ramp slammed back against the concrete wall with a violent crash. Heavy footsteps crunched rapidly down the descending ramp, accompanied by the cold, heavy clack of tactical boots.
Marcus spun around instantly, pushing Jane behind him as he threw open the driver’s door of the silver sedan. “Get in the car, Jane! Now!” he shouted, sliding into the driver’s seat and slamming the door shut with a heavy thud. He jammed his hand down on the center console, hitting the ignition button. The engine sputtered to life with a low, angry growl, the dashboard instruments glowing to life in a wash of green light.
In the rearview mirror, Marcus saw two dark figures sprinting down the ramp from the upper level. Even in the dim light, the sharp, clean-cut silhouette of Arthur Vance in his ruined blue suit was unmistakable, trailing a few paces behind a heavier, armed operative who moved with lethal, calculated efficiency.
“The gate! Use the automated exit!” Jane yelled from the passenger seat, her fingers clawing frantically at the dashboard as she watched the approaching figures draw closer.
Marcus slammed the gearshift into drive and stomped hard on the accelerator. The silver sedan surged forward with a squeal of rubber against concrete, tearing across the lower level toward the concrete exit barrier. Ahead of them, the heavy steel security gate was lowered, blocking the ramp that led up to the city streets.
“Hold on!” Marcus warned, his hands gripping the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity.

The sedan didn't slow down. It slammed directly through the automated wooden security arm with a loud splintering crack, sending white shards flying across the pavement as it launched up the exit ramp and burst out into the pouring rain of 4th Street.
As the car swerved sharply into traffic, Marcus glanced in the side mirror. Arthur Vance had reached the edge of the ramp, his face twisted in a mask of absolute fury as he watched his targets slip away into the stormy night. But Marcus knew this wasn't a victory. Arthur and his syndicate controlled the city’s corporate infrastructure, its traffic cameras, and its law enforcement networks. Escaping the parking garage was only surviving the first wave; the real war for their survival was just beginning.
