Chapter 11: Unearthing the Truth

The interior of the old boathouse smelled of damp wood, old rope, and the distant, metallic scent of stagnant water. A single battery-powered lantern cast a warm, flickering glow across the dusty wooden floorboards, illuminating a small cot, a rusted metal table, and a set of heavy concrete stairs leading down into the fortified basement below. Jane tucked Lily securely onto the cot, wrapping her in a heavy woolen blanket she had found hanging near the door. The little girl was fast asleep again within minutes, exhausted by the relentless terror of the past twelve hours.

Marcus stood near the rusted table, rubbing his bruised ribs where Arthur Vance had landed a glancing blow during their initial confrontation in the grand ballroom. Jane walked over, holding a small first-aid kit she had retrieved from a rusted cabinet, and silently began cleaning a minor scrape on Marcus’s knuckles.

“You didn't have to come back for me, Marcus,” Jane said softly, her eyes focused on his hand as she applied a strip of medical tape over the raw skin. “After everything I put you through—after letting you believe I was dead—you still risked your life to pull me out of that ballroom.”

Marcus pulled his hand back gently, looking down into her eyes. The anger that had burned so fiercely earlier in the evening had dissolved into a quiet, sorrowful understanding. “You’re the mother of my child, Jane,” Marcus said simply. “And no matter how angry I was about the lies, I couldn't just stand by and watch you walk into a firing squad. But you need to tell me everything now. No more half-truths. What is on the encrypted drive you took from Arthur’s office?”

Jane walked over to the wooden table, reached into the deep pocket of her beige trench coat, and pulled out a small, matte-black solid-state drive. She placed it carefully on the dusty wood, the small device looking entirely insignificant considering the lethal force being deployed to recover it.

“This drive contains the complete transaction history of every shell corporation Arthur Vance operates,” Jane explained, her voice dropping to a serious, intense whisper. “It proves that the syndicate has been funneling billions of dollars through legitimate corporate accounts to fund illegal arms shipments across international borders. More importantly, it contains the names of the federal regulators and judges on their payroll—including the men who approved the cover-up of my disappearance three years ago.”

Marcus stared at the small black drive. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity. Arthur Vance wasn't just a corporate executive protecting a bad investment; he was fighting to keep fifty years of federal prison sentences from destroying his entire empire.

“If we hand this over to the federal authorities directly, we’ll be killed before we even reach the precinct,” Marcus said, shaking his head slowly. “Vance has informants in every branch of local and federal law enforcement. We can’t trust the system to protect us.”

“Which is why we aren't going to the police,” Jane replied, a fierce, determined light flashing in her blue eyes. “We’re going to broadcast the entire ledger directly to every independent news network in the country at dawn. Once it’s public, there won't be a dark enough hole for Arthur Vance to hide in.”
