Chapter 9: The Sunday Gathering

Sunday arrived with a crisp breeze that rustled the autumn leaves outside their suburban home. Clara stood by the kitchen island, nervously smoothing down the front of her cream-colored button-down shirt while checking the oven timer. Mark was in the driveway, helping Helen welcome her estranged sister Sarah and little Maya, who was the exact same age as Lily. Clara took a deep breath, steeling herself for the awkward introductions, determined to be gracious for the sake of family unity. When the front door opened, the sound of low murmurs and shuffling feet echoed down the hallway.
Maya walked in timidly, holding onto Sarah’s weathered hand while peering curiously around the unfamiliar living room. She wore a simple pink dress that matched the description Helen had given them, looking remarkably sweet and entirely innocent of the adult drama swirling around her. Lily, wearing her signature yellow dress with ruffles, peeked out from behind the hallway wall, her blonde pigtails bouncing as she stared at the newcomer with childish curiosity. Clara knelt down, gently encouraging Lily to come forward and say hello to their guest.
Helen stood nearby, her hands clasped tightly together, watching the interaction with a look of profound hope and anxiety. Maya took a few hesitant steps toward Lily, holding out a small wooden toy she had brought along in her pocket. Lily blinked, looked up at her mother for approval, and then slowly reached out her hand to accept the offering. The silent barrier between the two toddlers dissolved instantly as they sat down on the living room rug together, beginning to examine the toy side by side. Clara felt a sudden, unexpected lump form in her throat as she watched the innocent children interact without any of the baggage of the past.
