Chapter 3: Shadows in the Attic

Later that evening, after Clara had put a reluctant Lily to sleep in her pink-trimmed toddler bed, the house settled into an uneasy, oppressive silence. Mark sat at the dining room table, reviewing bills and bank statements on his laptop, though his focus was entirely elsewhere. Clara paced the hardwood floors above, her footsteps rhythmic and angry, sounding like a steady drumbeat of suspicion. Downstairs, Helen had locked herself in the guest bedroom, refusing dinner and any further conversation. Mark rubbed his tired eyes, feeling the crushing weight of being caught in the crossfire between his wife and her mother.

The bizarre accusation Lily had made earlier—that Grandma was buying gifts for another little girl—echoed relentlessly in Mark’s mind. He stood up and quietly climbed the narrow wooden stairs leading to the dusty attic, a space they rarely used except for holiday decorations and old storage boxes. The air up here smelled of old paper and cedar. Holding his phone aloft for illumination, Mark navigated past cardboard boxes and winter coats until he reached the far corner near the small gable window. There, pushed half out of sight beneath a moth-eaten woolen blanket, sat a pristine, unwrapped cardboard shipping box bearing a commercial mailing label.

With his heart pounding against his ribs, Mark knelt on the dusty floorboards and pulled the box toward the sliver of moonlight coming through the dirty window. He peeled back the reinforced packing tape with trembling fingers, revealing layers of pink tissue paper. Inside lay a collection of expensive toddler toys—a wooden dollhouse, a set of imported porcelain tea cups, and a hand-knitted pink sweater clearly sized for a three-year-old child. Beneath the toys rested a greeting card in Helen’s familiar, elegant handwriting. Mark opened the card, his breath catching in his throat as he read the tender birthday wishes addressed to a name he had never heard before in his life.
