Chapter 4 - The Confession on Screen

The harsh blue light of the laptop screen cast long, skeletal shadows across Arthur’s face as the video file began to buffer. The living room grew deathly quiet, the caseworkers pausing their paperwork, and the police officers freezing near the doorway. Only the faint, distorted audio of heavy breathing played from the tiny speakers before a familiar face filled the frame.

It was Clara, sitting comfortably in Arthur’s own executive leather chair at his downtown office, holding a glass of amber whiskey.

"Hello, Arthur," Clara’s recorded voice purred through the speakers, dripping with absolute contempt. "If you're watching this, it means the first phase of our little experiment has successfully concluded. You thought you could bury the past deep inside your corporate algorithms, didn't you? You thought building towers of glass and steel would keep your dark secrets safe from the people you stepped on to get to the top."

Arthur stepped back from the desk, his breath catching in his throat as the camera in the video panned slightly to the right, revealing a stack of documents bearing the letterhead of his own company's internal compliance division.

"What is this?" Miller, the caseworker, demanded, taking a sharp step toward the desk. "Mr. Dalton, is this corporate surveillance?"

"I didn't record this!" Arthur protested, his voice cracking with panic. "I've never seen that file before in my life!"

On the screen, Clara took a slow sip of whiskey and smiled directly into the webcam lens, as if she could see right through time and space into Arthur's living room. "Your daughter was never just a pawn, Arthur. She was collateral. A security deposit for a debt you forgot you owed. Martha and I didn't invent the abuse; we simply documented the reality you created through your gross negligence at the firm. Every dismissed safety report, every silenced whistleblower, every ruined family—it all accumulates interest."

Lily whimpered, curling into a tight ball on the sofa, pulling a decorative pillow over her head to block out the terrifying voice of the woman who had terrorized her.

"Turn it off!" Davis barked, reaching across the desk to slam the laptop lid shut, cutting off Clara's chilling laughter mid-sentence. The sudden silence in the room was deafening.

The lead police officer stepped forward, his hand now resting firmly on the butt of his sidearm, his attitude toward Arthur shifting from skepticism to active suspicion. "Mr. Dalton, you're going to explain right now what corporate conspiracy your daughter has been dragged into, or I am taking you downtown in handcuffs."

Arthur opened his mouth to speak, to deny everything, to explain that he was just a mid-level risk analyst who crunched numbers for insurance payouts, but his phone suddenly buzzed violently in his pocket, flashing an incoming text message from an unknown, encrypted number.

He pulled the device out with trembling fingers and glanced at the screen. The message contained a single GPS coordinate and a chilling photo of his late wife’s abandoned childhood home, burning brightly in the dead of night.
