Chapter 7: The Agency’s Countermove

The phone on the kitchen island buzzed aggressively just as Mark was helping Clara finish a light lunch of soup and crackers. He picked up the receiver, seeing an unfamiliar direct line number flashing on the display. He pressed speakerphone so Clara could hear, wanting total transparency in everything he did moving forward.

"Mr. Vance, this is Arthur Sterling," a deep, gravelly voice announced without any introductory pleasantries. "I am the managing director and chief legal counsel for Grace Senior Care Solutions. I’ve reviewed the materials you sent over this morning."

Mark leaned against the counter, his expression hardening. "Then you know your agency placed a dangerous criminal in my home under false pretenses. I want to know what you plan to do about it before I hand this entire package to the district attorney and the state licensing board."

There was a long pause on the line, the sound of rustling paper audible in the background. When Sterling spoke again, his tone had shifted from corporate defensiveness to a calculated, probing neutrality that immediately set Mark on edge.

"Mr. Vance, let’s be entirely pragmatic about this situation," Sterling said smoothly. "Undoubtedly, the footage involving Ms. Vance is disturbing and unacceptable. However, let’s look at the broader picture. Publicly dragging our agency through a protracted legal battle will result in an enormous media circus. Your mother’s private medical history, her vulnerability, and your own work hours will be subjected to intense public scrutiny."

Mark’s jaw tightened. "Are you threatening me?"

"I am advising you, as a friend of the corporate community," Sterling replied smoothly, though the underlying menace in his voice was unmistakable. "Our legal team is prepared to offer a substantial financial settlement—a complete refund of all care fees, plus an additional compensation sum—provided that all parties sign a comprehensive non-disclosure agreement regarding this incident. That way, you can put this behind you quietly, and we can quietly handle internal personnel adjustments without destroying public trust in vital senior care infrastructure."

Clara looked up from her soup bowl, her eyes widening with sudden anxiety as she comprehended the drift of the conversation. She shook her head slightly, mouthing the word 'no' toward her son. Mark felt a surge of absolute contempt for the corporate machine that cared more about its public stock value and brand reputation than the safety of helpless human beings.

"You can take your hush money, Mr. Sterling, and shove it straight down the drain," Mark said, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding conviction. "My mother is not for sale, and neither is justice. I'll see you in court."
