Chapter 3: The Police Arrive

The wail of the police cruiser siren shattered the quiet suburban afternoon, echoing off the neatly trimmed hedges and brick facades of the neighborhood. Mark stood statue-like on the patio, keeping a protective arm wrapped around Clara’s shivering shoulders while she clutched his blue shirt tighter around her chest. The golden retriever continued to whine from its open crate, sensing the permanent shift in the household's emotional atmosphere. Elena stood by the sliding glass door, her canvas tote bag packed with her personal items, looking less like a detained suspect and more like an inconvenienced commuter waiting for a delayed train.

Two uniformed officers stepped through the side gate, their heavy boots crunching on the gravel path. The lead officer, a weathered sergeant named Miller, scanned the scene with practiced neutrality, his eyes moving from Clara’s damp hair to Mark’s grim expression, and finally landing on Elena’s poised posture.

"We got a call regarding an assault and elder abuse at this residence," Sergeant Miller announced, resting a hand casually near his utility belt. "Who placed the call, and what are we looking at here, folks?"

Mark stepped forward, holding out his smartphone with the screen unlocked and displaying the downloaded security footage file. "I did. My name is Mark Vance. This is my mother, Clara. And that woman is Elena Vance, our live-in caregiver. I caught her on my home security system pouring a bucket of cold water over my mother's head while she was standing defenseless on the patio."

Miller took the phone, his eyes narrowing as he watched the brief, brutal video clip. The color in the officer's face shifted visibly. He looked up from the screen, his professional demeanor hardening into genuine disgust as he glanced over at Elena.

"Is that correct, ma'am? Do you have anything to say about this footage?" Miller asked, stepping toward the doorway.

Elena tilted her chin up, maintaining her defiant composure. "It's taken completely out of context. The elderly woman suffers from severe cognitive decline. She was destroying property and screaming obscenities. I used a mild deterrent to calm her down. Any review board would agree that managing dementia patients requires unconventional behavioral modification techniques."

Clara whimpered softly at the word 'deterrent,' burying her face into Mark’s side. Mark felt a vein throbbing at his temple. The sheer institutional coldness of Elena’s defense made him physically nauseous.

"Dementia doesn't give anyone the right to torture an 82-year-old woman," Mark said, his voice shaking with tightly leashed fury. "Look at her files. Look at the other clips I found on the server. She’s been terrorizing my mother for weeks."

Miller nodded slowly, handing the phone back to Mark before gesturing to his partner to begin the formal procedure. "Pack your things, Ms. Vance. You're coming downtown with us for questioning."
