Chapter 14: The Final Collision

The deafening horn of the midnight freight train screamed through the tunnel, blowing a fierce gust of wind that whipped hair across everyone's faces and forced the guards on the ladder to pause, clinging desperately to the rungs.

"Now! Run for the maintenance alcove!" Arthur yelled, grabbing Clara’s arm and shoving Maeve and Eleanor toward a shallow concrete recess carved into the tunnel wall just feet away from the rushing tracks.

They scrambled into the narrow alcove, pressing themselves flat against the damp brickwork as the massive steel engine roared past them with earth-shattering power, throwing sparks and kicking up a thick cloud of dust and gravel.

Jonathan Vance stood frozen on the lower rungs of the ladder, forced to shield his eyes and clothes from the passing storm of steel and wind.

As the endless line of freight cars thundered between the two sides of the tunnel, creating an impenetrable wall of separation, Maeve locked eyes with Jonathan through the fleeting gaps between the flashing metal cars. There was no fear left in her gaze—only an unyielding demand for justice.

Ten agonizing seconds later, the caboose of the train finally cleared the crossing, speeding off into the darkness toward the open countryside and leaving behind a heavy, settling fog of smoke and dust.

The other side of the tunnel was completely empty.

Jonathan lowered his arms, coughing violently from the soot, and looked up at the maintenance ladder. The guards were still clinging to the rungs, coughing and disoriented, but the alcove across the tracks was completely vacant.

"Where did they go?" Jonathan roared, his voice cracking with panic as he scanned the empty shadows. "Find them! Tear this whole station apart!"

A few hundred yards down the tracks, hidden safely inside a rusted railway maintenance switch-shack connected to an old freight siding, Maeve, Clara, Eleanor, and Arthur caught their breath in the dim safety of the small room.

Eleanor slumped against the wooden wall, sliding down to the floor in sheer exhaustion, while Clara wrapped her arms around Maeve in a tight, breathless hug.

"We made it," Clara laughed through her tears. "We actually made it."

Arthur pulled the thick leather ledger out of his jacket, setting it gently down on an old wooden workbench beneath the dusty window. He opened it to the very last page, where a crisp, unsealed memory card had been securely taped inside the binding.

"What is that?" Maeve asked, stepping closer to inspect the small object.

"That," Arthur said with a grim, satisfied smile, "is a backup copy of the security feed from the hospital archives, showing Jonathan Vance ordering the cover-up thirteen years ago. And it was just automatically uploaded to every major news network in the country."

Before anyone could respond, the small radio on the workbench crackled to life, broadcasting an emergency news bulletin.
