Chapter 12: The Descent into the Unknown

"There they are! Grab them!" one of the bodyguards bellowed, sprinting across the room toward the open ventilation shaft.
Arthur swung his legs inside the duct just as heavy hands grabbed the hem of his canvas jacket. With a sharp twist, Arthur ripped himself free from the guard's grip, leaving a strip of torn fabric behind, and kicked backward with all his might, catching the guard square in the chest and sending him crashing into the metal shelving.
"Move, move, move!" Arthur yelled down the dark, narrow tunnel, crawling as fast as his weathered limbs could carry him behind Maeve and Clara.
Eleanor scrambled in last, pulling the heavy metal grating back into place as best she could and wedging Arthur’s wrench through the broken latch to buy them a few precious seconds of delay.
The ventilation shaft was pitch-black, cramped, and choked with decades of dust and soot that made everyone cough. They crawled frantically on their hands and knees through the twisting metal maze, following the faint draft of fresh air that Maeve’s keen senses had detected from the start.
"Where does this lead?" Clara panted, her voice muffled in the confined space as she crawled directly behind Maeve.
"Out," Maeve answered tersely over her shoulder. "Keep moving! Don't look back!"
Behind them, muffled shouts and the sound of tools prying at the metal grating echoed through the ductwork. Jonathan Vance’s men were right on their heels.
After what felt like an eternity of agonizing crawling through the dark, the metal floor abruptly ended, opening up into a vertical shaft equipped with a rusted iron maintenance ladder leading downward.
"Down the ladder!" Arthur commanded, reaching the opening first and testing the rungs with his heavy boots. "It drops down into the old subway maintenance tunnels. Once we hit the tracks, we can catch the midnight freight out of the city."
Maeve didn't hesitate. She swung her legs over the edge and descended the ladder with incredible speed and agility, her bare feet finding each rusted rung with practiced precision. Clara followed right after her, her muscles burning with exhaustion, while Eleanor and Arthur brought up the rear.
As Eleanor touched down on the concrete floor of the subway tunnel, the distant rumble of an approaching train vibrated through the ground, shaking dust from the ceiling overhead.
"Is everyone okay?" Clara asked, breathlessly shining her phone light across the small group.
Maeve nodded, brushing soot from her dirt-smudged face, clutching the silver locket tightly in her pocket.
"We're alive," Maeve said softly.
Suddenly, a blinding beam of light cut through the tunnel from the stairwell above them. Jonathan Vance stood at the top of the maintenance ladder, flanked by four armed security guards, looking down at them with absolute, unbridled fury.

"End of the line, family," Jonathan’s voice echoed menacingly through the dark tunnel.
