Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors of the church groaned on their iron hinges, echoing sharply through the quiet nave. Arthur whipped his head around, his eyes narrowing as a shaft of late-afternoon sunlight spilled across the flagstones, silhouetting two tall figures stepping into the foyer. It was Marcus and Julian, the family’s longtime estate attorneys, dispatched to oversee the final signatures on the probate documents once the burial concluded. They stopped dead in their tracks, their briefcases slipping slightly in their grip as they took in the chaotic scene at the front of the chapel.
"Arthur? What on earth..." Marcus started, his voice trailing off as he stared at the shattered white casket, the torn duct tape on the floor, and Clara sitting upright among the ruined satin padding. The sheer absurdity of the tableau paralyzed them for a crucial second. Arthur didn't panic; instead, his posture shifted with frightening smoothness. He raised a hand, offering a thin, rehearsed smile that didn't reach his cold eyes. "There’s been a terrible mistake, gentlemen. A medical crisis. Clara... she wasn't as gone as the paramedics believed."
"He's lying!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking with righteous fury as he stood up beside the casket, pointing a trembling finger straight at his uncle. "He put her in there! I saw him lock the latch before they brought the box inside!" Clara nodded weakly, her hands gripping the edge of the wood for support as she swung her legs over the side of the casket. The bruised skin around her wrists and mouth stood out in stark contrast to her pale complexion, silently giving the lie to Arthur’s manufactured narrative.

Julian took a slow step backward, his professional composure cracking as he looked at Clara’s unmistakable injuries. "Arthur, those are defense marks. That’s restraint tape. We need to call the authorities immediately." Arthur sighed softly, shaking his head with a theatrical display of exhaustion. "You don't understand, Julian. Clara has suffered a severe psychological break following the accident. She tied herself up in some bizarre delusion. Look at the boy—he's been poisoned against me by her erratic episodes."
The atmosphere in the church grew thick with suspicion and impending violence. Marcus reached slowly into his overcoat pocket, his fingers brushing against his mobile phone. Arthur saw the movement, and the polite mask slipped entirely, revealing the desperate predator underneath. With a sudden, explosive motion, Arthur lunged forward, shoving the heavy oak podium directly into the path of the attorneys while his hand finally pulled a heavy steel-barreled revolver from his holster.
