Chapter 13

The federal convoy tore through the darkening evening streets, sirens wailing and red-and-blue strobe lights painting the asphalt in flashing neon streaks. Inside the lead armored SUV, Marcus gripped the grab handle above the door as the vehicle took a sharp turn onto the private access road leading toward the municipal airfield.

In the back seat, Sarah sat rigidly beside Leo, who was now fully awake, his big hazel eyes wide with a tense, focused intensity. The adrenaline that had sustained them through the church was returning, fueled by the knowledge that Arthur was still out there, desperate and cornered, trying to make his final escape.

"He's not going to get away, is he, Mom?" Leo asked quietly, looking up into her face.

Sarah squeezed his small hand, her voice steady and resolute. "No, baby. People who run away from what they've done always reach a dead end eventually. We're going to make sure justice catches up."

Up ahead, through the chain-link perimeter fence topped with barbed wire, the flat expanse of the airfield asphalt stretched out under the harsh glare of halogen floodlights. Parked near the end of the main runway sat a sleek twin-engine private jet, its turbine engines already whining at high pitch, ready to taxi down the strip.

"There! On the secondary access road!" Marcus shouted, pointing through the windshield toward a black luxury sedan that was barreling directly toward the service gate of the airfield.

The driver of Marcus’s SUV slammed on the accelerator, the heavy vehicle surging forward with a roar of diesel engines, cutting off the black sedan just as it reached the chain-link gate. The sedan skidded to a halt, the rear bumper clipping the side of a concrete barrier with a loud screech of tearing metal.

The doors of the sedan flew open instantly. Arthur tumbled out onto the gravel, his expensive black suit wrinkled and dusty, his tie missing entirely. He didn't look back at the federal SUV; instead, he scrambled frantically on foot toward the open gate of the airfield, his eyes locked on the waiting jet whose ladder was still lowered.

Marcus kicked open the SUV door before it had even fully stopped, hitting the ground running. "Federal agents! Stop right there, Arthur!" he roared, drawing his service weapon as he sprinted across the tarmac.
