Chapter 11

The sleek black sedan swept off the highway ramp and curved into the sprawling perimeter of the federal plaza. The late afternoon shadows cast long, geometric patterns across the wide concrete steps leading up to the heavy bronze doors of the Department of Justice annex. Sarah slowed the car, guiding it toward the security checkpoint booth where a uniformed guard stood with a clipboard.

Leo pressed his face against the side window, watching the heavy steel bollards lining the perimeter. The sight of armed federal officers in their crisp blue uniforms brought a strange, settling comfort to his eight-year-old mind. These men didn't wear black suits and carry hidden revolvers; they wore badges that meant rules, protection, and order.

The guard stepped forward, raising a hand to signal a stop. Sarah rolled down her window, letting the cool evening air rush into the car. Her face was composed, though her heart hammered against her ribs with renewed anxiety.

"State your business, ma'am," the guard asked politely, though his eyes darted suspiciously around the vehicle, taking in the dust-stained clothes, the torn fabric of Sarah’s dress, and the silent, pale boy sitting in the back.

"My name is Sarah Vance," she said clearly, her voice carrying an authoritative ring that brooked no argument. "I need to speak immediately to Agent Marcus Vance in the Special Investigations Division. I have digital evidence regarding corporate embezzlement and attempted kidnapping involving Vanguard Maritime."

The guard paused, his professional demeanor shifting slightly as he registered the name. He stepped closer to the window, peering past Sarah to get a better look at Leo in the back seat. "Vance? You're Sarah Vance? There's an active missing person alert issued by local authorities three hours ago."

"Issued by the same men who locked me inside a coffin," Sarah countered without missing a beat, holding up the silver flash drive between her fingers. "This drive contains every decrypted file from the Vanguard offshore accounts. Call Agent Marcus right now, or you are going to be an accessory to a federal cover-up."

The guard stared at her for a long, tense moment, reading the absolute seriousness in her bloodshot eyes and bruised neck. Without another word, he turned, picked up the radio attached to his shoulder, and spoke in a low, rapid murmur.

Within two minutes, heavy glass doors from the annex swung open, and two armed federal agents flanked by a tall, gray-haired man in a dark trench coat hurried down the concrete steps toward the car. Marcus Vance—Sarah’s estranged brother-in-law and head of the federal white-collar crime unit—reached the driver’s side window, his face a mask of stunned disbelief.

"Sarah? Good God, what happened to you?" Marcus demanded, pulling the door open as the security guard lifted the concrete barrier.
