Chapter 7 - The Courtyard Ambush

The cold night air hit Clara’s face like a physical wall, carrying the sharp scent of damp earth and distant pine trees from the cliffside forest. But the rush of freedom was cut terrifyingly short as the strong hands gripped her collar, spinning her around and slamming her back against the rough stone exterior wall of the mansion.

Clara gasped, the breath rushing out of her lungs in a ragged wheeze. She blinked against the darkness, trying to focus on her captor. Standing over her in the dim amber glow of the courtyard security light was not Dr. Sterling, nor was it Thomas. It was Marcus, the head of the estate’s private security detail, his broad shoulders blocking her only escape route toward the gravel drive.

"Going somewhere, kid?" Marcus asked, his voice low and devoid of any emotion. He didn't raise his voice, but his grip on her uniform was like a vise, holding her firmly against the damp stone.

"Let me go!" Clara cried out, twisting desperately in his grasp, wincing as the sudden movement tore slightly at the fresh stitches beneath her thick white arm bandage. "They're killing her! Dr. Sterling and Eleanor—they're murdering Mrs. Morel!"

Marcus didn't flinch. His stoic, scarred face remained completely impassive, hardened by years of unquestioning loyalty to the highest bidder in the Morel household. "I don't get paid to care about family politics, Clara," he said flatly. "I get paid to keep the peace and protect the assets of this estate. And right now, you are the biggest disruption to that peace."

From the open doorway behind him, Dr. Sterling appeared, stepping out into the cool courtyard air. He was breathing heavily, adjusting the collar of his lab coat with one gloved hand while holding Catherine Morel’s stolen leather journal in the other. He cast a cold, clinical glance at the struggling maid, his eyes narrowing with irritation.

"Good catch, Marcus," Dr. Sterling said, stepping closer and tapping the leather cover of the journal against his palm. "She nearly slipped out through the service wing with evidence that could have compromised tonight's transition. Mrs. Vance is waiting in the foyer. Take her down to the lower security archive room and lock her in until the auditors finish their final sign-off."

"Understood, Doctor," Marcus replied, tightening his grip on Clara’s arm.

"No! Please!" Clara begged, her voice cracking with desperation as she planted her heels against the cobblestones, fighting every inch of the way. "Julian knows! He knows the truth about the locked room! When he gets out, he will tear this entire house down to the foundations to find you!"

Dr. Sterling chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that chilled Clara to the bone. "Mr. Morel isn't going anywhere tonight, my dear. The west wing window is locked from the outside, the phone lines to his quarters have been severed, and by the time morning comes, the legal transfer of power will be entirely complete. He will inherit a bankrupt shell of an empire, and his mother will have quietly passed away in her sleep. A tragic end, perfectly scripted."

Clara stared at the doctor in sheer horror. The depth of their deception was staggering, calculated down to the very last detail. They weren't just covering up theft; they were executing a complete corporate and familial takeover, using Eleanor’s charm and Dr. Sterling’s medical authority as weapons of destruction.

Marcus began dragging Clara across the courtyard toward the heavy iron cellar doors that led down to the subterranean archives. The metal doors stood slightly ajar, exhaling a gust of damp, stagnant air from the underground chambers below.

"Move, girl. Don't make this harder on yourself," Marcus muttered, pushing her forward toward the dark stone steps.

Clara’s heart pounded frantically. She knew that once she was locked down in those windowless archives, she would never see the light of day again. Her eyes scanned the ground desperately as they neared the cellar entrance.

Lying half-hidden beneath a cluster of overgrown ivy near the iron railing was a heavy iron wrench dropped earlier by one of the estate maintenance workers.

As Marcus shifted his grip slightly to pull open the heavy cellar door, Clara dropped her weight downward, letting out a convincing cry of defeat.

Marcus grunted, momentarily thrown off balance by her sudden drop in weight. In that split second of distraction, Clara swept her good arm down, her fingers locking tightly around the cold handle of the iron wrench hidden in the ivy.

Before Marcus could react, Clara whipped around and swung the heavy tool upward with every ounce of adrenaline left in her body.
