Chapter 6 - The Cold Grip

The hand clamped over Clara’s mouth was freezing, smelling faintly of surgical disinfectant and expensive French perfume. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she struggled against the invisible captor. She gripped the leather journal tightly in her right hand, while her left arm—still swathed in its thick, protective bandage—throbbed with a sharp, blinding agony as the weight of the struggle strained the bruised tissue beneath.

"Quiet, you little pest," a low, venomous voice whispered directly into her ear, sending a shiver of pure dread down her spine. It wasn't Eleanor. It was Dr. Sterling, the estate's private physician, his tall, gaunt frame looming over her from the dark shadows of the pantry archway.

Clara tried to scream, but the sound was muffled instantly against the cold palm of his latex-gloved hand. He dragged her backward with terrifying ease, pulling her away from the prep table and deeper into the suffocating gloom of the scullery.

Back in the grand foyer, Eleanor paced frantically across the marble floor, her red dress swishing violently with every turn. Thomas stood a few feet away, rubbing his bruised foot where Clara had kicked him, looking thoroughly shaken by the sudden escalation of events.

"She went toward the kitchens, Mrs. Vance," Thomas said, his voice laced with nervous anxiety. "Shall I send the estate guards to sweep the lower levels?"

"No," Eleanor snapped, stopping dead in her tracks to glare at the manager. "Dr. Sterling is already handling the situation downstairs. You are going to stay right here and help me prepare for the arrival of the financial auditors. If anyone asks why Mr. Morel is not in the drawing room, you will tell them he has taken ill with a severe migraine and is resting in his private quarters. Do you understand me?"

Thomas swallowed hard, his loyalty visibly wavering as he stared at the woman’s unhinged expression. "And what about the broken glass upstairs? The window in the west wing was shattered, Mrs. Vance. Mr. Morel might have—"

"Mr. Morel is locked safely in a room where he cannot interfere with matters he is too weak to comprehend!" Eleanor interrupted, stepping dangerously close to Thomas and jabbing a manicured finger into his chest. "You will keep your mouth shut, Thomas, unless you want your family's medical pension revoked by midnight. Am I crystal clear?"

Thomas lowered his gaze, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Yes, Mrs. Vance. Crystal clear."

Deep in the shadows of the scullery, Dr. Sterling shoved Clara hard against the cold brick wall, pinning her in place with his forearm pressed against her collarbone. The impact knocked the wind out of her lungs, and the leather journal slipped from her grasp, clattering loudly against the stone floor.

Dr. Sterling looked down at the book lying at his feet, a cold, calculated smile stretching across his thin lips. He reached down with his gloved hand, snatched the journal off the floor, and tucked it securely inside the pocket of his pristine white lab coat.

"Foolish girl," Dr. Sterling murmured, his voice dripping with condescension as he stared down at her. "You honestly believed a lowly maid could outsmart an operation years in the making? You should have kept your head down, served your meals, and ignored the things you saw in the medical logs."

Clara gasped for air, her chest heaving as she glared up at him with unyielding defiance. "You're killing her," she whispered, her voice raw and shaking. "Catherine Morel isn't sick. You've been poisoning her slow drip by drip to force the asset transfer."

Dr. Sterling’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. He leaned in closer, his face inches from hers. "She was an old woman ready to pass on, my dear. We simply... accelerated the timeline to secure the future of this estate. And now, unfortunately for you, your timeline has just run out as well."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small glass ampoule filled with a clear, viscous liquid, along with a sterile disposable syringe. The pale light from the hallway caught the glass barrel as he began to draw back the plunger with chilling precision.

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew what that liquid was—the exact sedative they had been using to keep Catherine Morel compliant and silent. If he injected her with that dose, she would be unconscious within seconds, and they could easily make her disappearance look like an accidental overdose in the servants' quarters.

Panic surged through her veins. As Dr. Sterling raised the syringe toward her bandaged arm, searching for an exposed patch of skin, Clara unleashed every ounce of her remaining strength. She drove her knee upward with devastating force, aiming straight for his center of mass.

Her strike caught him square in the stomach. Dr. Sterling let out a sharp gasp of shock, his grip loosening just enough for Clara to wrench her body away from the wall.

She didn't hesitate. She bolted toward the heavy wooden door leading out to the rear courtyard, her bare feet slapping frantically against the cold stone floor.

"Stop her!" Dr. Sterling wheezed, stumbling backward against the scullery shelves as he tried to regain his breath.

Clara threw her weight against the courtyard door, bursting out into the cool, damp night air just as a pair of strong, heavy hands grabbed the back of her black uniform collar, yanking her violently backward into the darkness.
