Chapter 7: The Unseen Ally

Back at the Vance estate, evening had begun to cast long, indigo shadows across the manicured lawns. Inside the brightly lit nursery, Elena stood beside the steel hospital bassinet, gently stroking the soft blue blanket that covered the newborn. The baby was sleeping peacefully, its breathing steady and strong—a testament to the fierce will that had brought it back from the edge. The door to the nursery clicked open, and Elena turned sharply, her hand dropping instinctively to the pocket of her uniform, where her phone rested.

It was not Julian, but Detective Miller who stepped into the room, holding a small manila evidence envelope. The detective closed the door quietly behind him, his expression grim. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Elena,” Miller said quietly, walking over to stand a few feet away from the bassinet. “Or should I say, Agent Vance?”

Elena did not flinch. She withdrew her hand from her pocket and crossed her arms over her apron, her dark eyes narrowing slightly. “My name is Elena Rostova. I am a licensed private investigator specializing in corporate compliance and executive protection. I was hired by Clara Vance three months ago when she discovered her uncle was funneling company funds to poison her medical regimen slowly.”

Miller nodded slowly, pulling a chair out and sitting down near the corner of the room. “We traced the shell company from the pharmaceutical order. It leads directly to an offshore account controlled by Marcus Vance. But we don't have a direct link tying him to the house on the night of the birth. The security logs were overwritten remotely from a terminal inside the main office.”

“Julian is at the tower right now confronting him, isn't he?” Elena asked, a hint of genuine worry breaking through her professional composure.

“Yes,” Miller replied. “And that’s why I’m here. Marcus has prepared for this eventuality for months. He’s already called an emergency quorum of the board to invoke the incapacitation clause in Julian’s CEO contract, using Julian’s emotional instability as the legal justification. If Julian loses control at the office, Marcus takes complete legal control of the estate, the company, and most importantly, the guardianship of this child.”

Elena’s jaw tightened. She looked down at the sleeping infant, then back up at the detective. “Clara knew this day would come. That’s why she signed over emergency power of attorney to me regarding the child’s immediate medical and physical custody in the event of her incapacitation. Legally, Marcus cannot touch this baby as long as I am the registered guardian of record.”

“That only works if you survive the night, Elena,” Miller warned, standing up and walking toward the window that overlooked the estate’s long gated driveway. “Marcus isn’t just playing a corporate game anymore. When I left the precinct, my captain received an anonymous tip that a break-in was scheduled for this property tonight. They aren't just trying to seize the company; they are tying up loose ends.”
