Chapter 2: The Desperate Breath

The air in the private medical wing grew unnaturally heavy as Elena cradled the newborn against her chest. Julian remained on his knees, his body trembling violently as he reached out a desperate hand toward the maid. “What are you doing?” he demanded again, his voice dropping into a harsh, broken whisper that resonated with raw paternal terror. The police officers near the door took a half-step forward, hands resting near their utility belts, unsure whether to intervene in a domestic dispute or allow the apparent grief to run its course. But Elena paid them no mind; her entire focus was locked onto the pale, unmoving face of the infant in her arms.

Without hesitating, Elena leaned down over the tiny form. With precise, deliberate care, she pressed her lips close to the baby’s face and gently breathed into its mouth, regulating her own respiration to match the delicate scale of a newborn’s lungs. It was an unorthodox, desperate measure, born not of medical training but of a profound, instinctual desperation that defied the cold certainty of the flatlining monitor nearby. Julian watched in agonizing suspension, his chest heaving with every restrained sob. The emotional tension in the room was almost tangible, stretching like a tight wire that threatened to snap at any second.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The monitor continued its steady, mournful drone, a mechanical death knell echoing off the crystal chandelier above. The officers exchanged glances, preparing to step in and relieve the distraught maid of the child. But then, beneath the soft folds of the blue blanket, a tiny chest hitched. A microscopic intake of air rustled against Elena’s skin. The baby’s minuscule fingers, previously curled and cold, twitched against the fabric.

Elena did not stop. She repeated the gentle, measured breaths, her face solemn and completely concentrated, blocking out the police, the opulent room, and the weeping father at her feet. She was channeling every ounce of her life force into the infant, operating on a primal understanding that modern medicine had somehow missed a crucial step in the chaotic minutes following the birth. Julian leaned closer, his tears dripping onto the polished floor as a fragile, flickering hope began to reignite in his chest. He dared not speak, terrified that breaking the silence might shatter the fragile miracle unfolding before him.

The monitor’s flatline suddenly stuttered. A faint, irregular electronic beep pierced the air, followed immediately by another. The crimson line on the screen bounced, forming a jagged, unsteady wave of life. The baby let out a weak, raspy cry, the sound of a new life fighting its way back from the precipice of the abyss.
