Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Code

Marcus stopped typing, his fingers hovering over the keys. He looked up at Claire in sudden realization. “David built the backdoor into the architecture?”
“Before they reassigned him to the field,” Claire said, her eyes never leaving the Director’s face. The smug look on the older man’s face vanished, replaced by a sudden flash of panic that he tried desperately to mask.
“He was an analyst, Bennett,” the Director scoffed, though his voice lacked its previous conviction. “He didn't have clearance for the core source code.”
“He had clearance because you trusted him to clean up your mess,” Claire said, stepping right up to the console and slamming her encrypted flash drive into the primary USB port.
The monitor flashed red. A sharp alarm tone pinged from the machine, and the progress bar instantly froze at 91%.
“What did you just do?” the Director shouted, lunging forward, but Marcus grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved him hard back against the wooden support beam.
“Hands where I can see them!” Marcus ordered, pressing the barrel of his sidearm against the Director’s ribs.
On the screen, a new dialogue box appeared, blinking in green text: Override Accepted. User: Bennett, D. Welcome back.
Sheriff Vance let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for five minutes. He lowered his weapon slightly, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his sleeve. “Is it downloading?”
“It’s not just downloading,” Claire whispered, her eyes wide as she watched the scrolling data streams cascade down the monitor. “It’s pulling the complete unredacted roster of every ghost operation run out of this basin for the last fifteen years. Every asset, every slush fund, every name.”
Deputy Miller stepped up beside her, staring at the screen in awe. “My uncle’s name... is it on there?”
“It’s at the very top of page four,” Claire said quietly, her voice softening with a bitter melancholy.
Before anyone could take another breath, a loud, metallic thud echoed from the front porch. Followed immediately by the unmistakable sound of a heavy-caliber rifle round punching clean through the heavy timber front door, splintering wood directly into the room.

“We’ve got incoming!” Vance yelled, diving behind a heavy oak table.
