Chapter 6 - Beneath the Floorboards

The crawlspace beneath the cabin smelled of damp earth, rotting timber, and old electrical wiring. Claire moved forward on her hands and knees, her ears straining to catch the muffled sound of voices filtering through the pine floorboards directly above their heads.

“...transfer rate is too slow,” a harsh, unfamiliar voice rumbled through the floor. It belonged to an older man, carrying the crisp, educated cadence of someone accustomed to giving orders in carpeted Washington boardrooms. “If we don't complete the packet encryption before midnight, the entire audit fails.”

“Stop complaining and watch the ridge,” a second voice replied. That was the familiar, raspy tone of the man Claire had hunted for four long years.

Deputy Miller was crawling just behind her, his breathing loud in the confined space. Claire held up a closed fist, signaling him to halt. She reached out in the dark, her fingers brushing against the cold metal ring of the rusted trapdoor leading directly up into the cabin's utility closet.

She pressed her ear against the wood. Above them, heavy footsteps paced back and forth across the floorboards. The vibration of computer cooling fans hummed through the walls, a steady, mechanical drone that covered the sound of their approach.

Claire slowly gripped the iron ring and began to twist it. It groaned with a sharp, metallic screech that sounded like a gunshot in the quiet space.

Above them, the footsteps stopped instantly.

“Did you hear that?” the raspy voice asked.

“Check the back hallway,” the Director ordered sharply.

Claire didn't hesitate. She threw her weight upward against the wooden hatch, bursting out of the floorboards like a coiled spring, her tactical knife drawn and ready.

The small utility room was cluttered with spare computer monitors and tangled cables. Standing in the doorway leading into the main room was an older man with graying hair and a tailored gray suit that looked entirely out of place in a rusted timber cabin. His eyes went wide with absolute, unadulterated shock as he stared at the woman emerging from the floor.

“Claire?” the man gasped, taking an involuntary step backward.

“Hello, Director,” Claire said, her voice dangerously calm as she stepped out of the utility closet and leveled her gaze directly at him.

Before the Director could reach for the weapon tucked inside his suit jacket, Deputy Miller burst up behind Claire, leveling his rifle square at the man’s chest.

“Don't move an inch,” Miller ordered, his voice echoing off the wooden walls.
