Chapter 2 - The Empty Frame

The question hung in the stale air like a physical blow. Arthur stood frozen in front of the glowing television screen, his eyes darting between the black-and-white security footage and the living room space behind him. On the screen, the timestamp marked midnight from three nights prior. Elena was shown guiding Lily into the laundry room, closing the heavy wooden door behind them. Yet, on the subsequent camera angles showing the exit hallway, Elena walked out alone. Lily never reappeared on any camera.

Arthur slowly turned around, his dark blue button-down shirt damp with cold sweat. His gaze locked onto the little girl standing by the sofa. She was holding her stuffed rabbit plushie with the same desperate grip, her short blonde bob swaying slightly as she nodded.

"Who is this?" Arthur whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the television screen.

Elena stood up abruptly from the dining table, the chair legs scraping harshly against the wooden floor. Her white satin blouse caught the blue light of the TV, making her look pale and spectral.

"Arthur, stop looking at that garbage. The system is glitching. It’s an algorithm error," Elena said, her voice rising in pitch, losing its polished veneer.

"An algorithm error?" Arthur barked, the shock finally giving way to a raw, explosive fury. "It shows you taking her into the laundry room and walking out by yourself! And here she is! How is she standing right here if she never came out?"

Lily took a tentative step forward, her big blue eyes swimming with fresh tears. "She put me in the dark box, Daddy. The cold box where the loud machines live. I stayed there for a long time until I found the window."

Arthur looked down at Lily, his heart tearing in two. He knelt down to her eye level, ignoring Elena’s frantic approach. "Lily, sweetheart, look at me. When did this happen?"

"Three days ago," Lily sobbed softly, wiping her cheek with the sleeve of her white pajama top with pink trim. "When you were away on the business trip."

Arthur stood back up, his eyes narrowing as he stared at his wife. The realization hit him like a physical impact. The girl standing in front of him possessed Lily’s face, Lily’s voice, and Lily’s stuffed rabbit. But the security footage, time-stamped and crystal clear, proved that the real Lily had been left trapped in the basement storage space behind the laundry room for hours during his absence. Elena had lied, covered it up, and acted as if nothing had happened. But if the girl on the screen was locked away, then who was currently standing in his living room?

Elena reached out, her fingers catching the sleeve of Arthur’s shirt. "Listen to me, Arthur. You don't understand what we are dealing with. If you call anyone, if you look any closer, we are all going to lose everything."

Arthur yanked his arm away, stepping back as if burned. "Who is she, Elena? If my daughter was locked in the basement, who the hell is standing right here?"
