Chapter 11 - The Breach in the Hallway

The grey static parted further, revealing a silhouette that mimicked the exact shape of a six-year-old child wearing a white pajama top with pink trim. The figure reached a pale, pixelated hand through the swirling void, its fingers extending unnaturally toward Arthur and the real Lily.
"Arthur, don't let it touch her!" Elena screamed from the top of the stairwell, her long dark brown hair whipping wildly around her face as she gripped the wooden banister. "If that construct takes her hand, the replacement becomes permanent, and our Lily ceases to exist in every timeline!"
Arthur stumbled backward against the living room wall, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The heat radiating from his daughter’s body had grown intensely hot, burning against his chest through his dark blue button-down shirt. Lily whimpered softly, her blue eyes fluttering shut as exhaustion overwhelmed her.
"Get away from my daughter!" Arthur roared, summoning a fierce wave of adrenaline. He thrust his free hand forward, striking the reaching, pixelated hand with all his might.
When his knuckles made contact, there was no flesh or bone—only a sharp, electric shock that sent a violent jolt up his arm, accompanied by the high-pitched shriek of digital feedback. The static violently repelled him, slamming the front door shut with a deafening crash that silenced the roaring washing machines in the basement instantly.
The heavy silence that followed was suffocating. The living room lights flickered once, twice, and then stabilized into a dim, amber glow.
Arthur slumped to his knees, cradling Lily carefully against his grey pants. He checked her pulse at her wrist; it was dangerously rapid, fluttering like a trapped moth. He looked up at Elena, who was slowly walking down the stairs, her expression a mix of profound sorrow and tragic acceptance.
"We are running out of time, Arthur," Elena said softly, stopping a few feet away from him. "The house isn't just trying to trap us; it’s digesting us. Every minute you spend fighting the architecture, her fever climbs higher."
"There has to be a way out of this loop, Elena. We can't just surrender," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a raw vulnerability that cut through the sterile air.
May you like
"There is a way, but you won't like it," Elena replied, pointing a trembling finger toward the basement door at the end of the dark corridor. "You have to go back down there. Alone. And give the house what it originally asked for twenty-five years ago."
