Chapter 5: The Hidden Channel

Judge Thomas signaled for the court clerk to approach the bench. With trembling hands, the clerk stepped forward and carefully retrieved the pink plastic walkie-talkie from Lily’s outstretched palm, placing it inside a sterile evidence bag before setting it gently on the judge’s desk. Lily watched the exchange with solemn vigilance, her pigtails swaying slightly as she shook her head. “The bad part isn't on this one,” Lily murmured, her small voice cutting through the quiet courtroom like a knife. “This one just lets you hear when someone walks past the study door.”

Clara stepped closer, crouching down beside the girl. “Lily, can you tell us who you heard walking past your father’s study on the night he died?” The question was delicate, requiring absolute precision to avoid leading the witness while still drawing out the critical facts. Lily looked at Clara, recognizing a kindred spirit of protection and truth. The girl’s eyes darted briefly toward the gallery, locking onto Eleanor Vance. A heavy, suffocating tension descended upon the room. Eleanor gripped the wooden pew in front of her so tightly that the blood drained entirely from her fingertips.

District Attorney Hayes recognized the danger immediately. “Your Honor, the defense is manipulating a traumatized minor. This cross-examination—if we can even call it that—is entirely out of order!” Judge Thomas held up his hand, silencing the prosecutor without a word. The judge looked down at Lily, his voice deep and measured. “Who did you hear, Lily? Take your time and speak clearly.” Lily swallowed hard, her chest rising with a deep, natural breath. “It was stepmom,” Lily whispered, the words dropping into the silence like stones in a deep well. “And Uncle Julian.”

Gasps erupted from the gallery. Julian Vance, Arthur’s younger brother and the current chief financial officer of Vance Enterprises, had been sitting quietly in the second row just moments before. Now, all heads turned toward his seat, only to find it empty. Julian had slipped out the side door while everyone was focused on the child’s testimony. Clara sprang to her feet, pointing toward the heavy exit doors. “He’s running! Stop him!” Two bailiffs reacted instantly, bolting from the courtroom to secure the exits, leaving the remaining spectators in a state of absolute pandemonium. Judge Thomas did not bang his gavel; he simply watched the doors close, his face etched with grim determination. The web of lies spun by the prosecution was unraveling at a breathtaking pace, and the true nightmare of the Vance household was finally coming to light.
