Chapter 14

Judge Callahan set the file down on her desk, interlacing her fingers as she leaned back in her high-backed leather chair. The silence in the room stretched for several long seconds, heavy with anticipation.
"Mr. Jax Miller," the judge said, reading his name from the petition. "According to these records, you haven't been in the child's life for the past eight years. What makes you think you are equipped to provide a stable, safe home for him now?"
Jax stepped forward, gently letting go of Leo's hand so he could speak with total sincerity. He didn't try to hide his past, nor did he offer empty excuses for his absence.
"Your Honor, for eight years I was running from my own shadows, believing that staying away was a favor to them," Jax said, his voice deep, steady, and entirely devoid of defensive posturing. "I was wrong. I was a coward. But when Leo walked up to me last night in that hotel dining room holding his mother's photograph, everything changed. I realized that my past doesn't define who I am today, but my choices from this moment forward will define who I am to my son. I have a steady job, a home, and every drop of strength I have belongs to him now."
Judge Callahan listened intently, watching his micro-expressions, the natural cadence of his breathing, and the total lack of hesitation in his voice. She then looked down at Leo, who stood quietly beside the desk.
"And you, young man," the judge addressed Leo directly. "What do you want? Do you want to live with this man?"
Leo did not hesitate for a single second. He looked up at Judge Callahan with complete earnestness. "Yes, Your Honor. He's my dad. Mom said he would come when I needed a miracle, and he did."
A subtle, gentle smile touched the corner of Judge Callahan's lips. She picked up her heavy fountain pen, pulled the emergency petition toward her, and signed her name with a decisive stroke across the signature line. She stamped the document with the official court seal.

"Emergency temporary and permanent guardianship granted, effective immediately," Judge Callahan announced, looking up at Marcus Vance. "File the remaining registry updates by Monday morning. Mr. Miller, congratulations on finding your son. Don't let him down."
"I won't, Your Honor. Thank you," Jax said, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion as he accepted the signed paperwork from Marcus.
