Chapter 7 - The Patriarch's Confession

The flickering light from the OLED screen painted the dark boardroom in stark shades of blue and white. The late patriarch’s tired eyes stared directly out from the recording, carrying an immense weight that seemed to transcend the digital barrier.
“My family is rotten to the core, Sophia,” the old man’s voice rasped from the hidden speakers, echoing off the mahogany walls with ghostly clarity. “I built this empire on ambition, but they built their lives on cruelty. I watched Margaret destroy my daughter-in-law before you. I watched Daniel learn to wear the same mask of polished indifference. When I met you, I saw someone with a pure heart and an unbreakable spine. That is why I left everything to you. Not to punish them, but to save you from becoming one of them.”
Eleanor and the remaining board members sat in stunned silence, their eyes glued to the screen. The myth of the benevolent Sterling dynasty was being systematically dismantled by its own creator, broadcast in high definition for the corporate remnants to witness.
Sophia watched the screen, her chest tightening slightly as the old man’s words washed over her. He had known. From the very beginning, he had known what Daniel and Margaret were capable of, using her as a shield and a pawn in their elaborate game of social climbing and financial preservation.
“There is a physical ledger,” the video continued, the old man leaning closer to the camera lens as if whispering a deep, dangerous secret. “Hidden behind the false panel in the estate library’s main fireplace. It details every illegal acquisition, every covered-up scandal, and every penny they stole from your family’s original estate thirty years ago.”
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Thirty years ago. That was when her own father’s company had mysteriously collapsed overnight, driving him to ruin and an early grave. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together in her mind with terrifying velocity. Daniel wasn't just a deceitful husband; he was the direct beneficiary of her own family’s historical destruction.
The screen flickered, displaying a final string of cryptographic coordinates before cutting to black.
The boardroom remained dead silent. Arthur looked at Sophia, his expression grave and supportive.
“The library fireplace,” Arthur whispered softly so only she could hear. “That explains why Margaret never allowed anyone to touch the north wing of the estate, even during the massive renovations three years ago.”
Sophia straightened her posture, the residual dampness of her ruined blue dress completely forgotten as a surge of pure, ice-cold adrenaline flooded her veins. She pulled the titanium flash drive from the master terminal and slipped it securely into her pocket.
“We’re going back to the estate, Arthur,” Sophia said, her voice dropping to a low, commanding register. “Before Margaret or Daniel has a chance to destroy what’s left of the library.”
Eleanor cleared her throat tentatively from across the table, her hands trembling as she clutched her pen. “And... and what of the board, Sophia? What are our directives?”
Sophia paused at the threshold of the heavy mahogany doors, turning her head slightly to look back at the terrified directors.
“Your directive is to sit here and wait for the federal agents,” Sophia replied coldly. “Your corporate lives are finished. Now, it’s time to settle the personal accounts.”
She strode out of the boardroom, her heels clicking sharply against the corridor floor. But as she descended the private elevator to the underground parking garage, a strange, prickling sensation settled at the back of her neck. Her phone buzzed violently in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw a live surveillance feed from the estate’s security system.

The screen showed Daniel standing alone in the dark library, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker directly in front of the wood-paneled false wall.
