Chapter 4 - The Frozen Empire

The faint chime of Sophia’s smartphone echoed softly across the silent patio, sounding to the terrified onlookers like the tolling of a funeral bell. On the screen, a progress bar flashed in sharp crimson, moving swiftly from zero to one hundred percent. Across the city, in sleek glass skyscrapers downtown, three hundred automated servers belonging to Sterling Holdings shut down simultaneously.
Margaret lunged toward Sophia one final time, but the security guards intercepted her smoothly, pinning her arms gently to her sides as she thrashed with undignified fury.
“You arrogant little cheat!” Margaret screamed, spittle flying from her lips as her perfectly styled blonde hair came loose from its pins. “You think you can destroy fifty years of legacy with the tap of a screen? The board will vote you out by morning! We have emergency clauses!”
Sophia didn't blink. She calmly slipped the smartphone back into the pocket of her soaked blue dress and tilted her head.
“There are no emergency clauses left, Margaret,” Sophia replied evenly. “Your late husband ensured that when he rewrote the articles of incorporation. Every emergency backup route, every loophole, every offshore shelter—they were all tied to a single authorization key. The one he handed me six months ago while you were busy planning charity galas and plotting my humiliation.”
Daniel staggered backward, tripping slightly over the edge of a decorative stone planter before catching his balance against a marble pillar. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly under the amber lights. He stared at his wife, the realization crashing over him like a tidal wave.
“You knew,” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. “From the very beginning. The apartment in the city, the gallery opening, the way we met... it was all engineered.”
Sophia turned her gaze toward him, her expression softening just enough to reveal the deep scars of the betrayal that had brought her to this exact moment.
“I loved you, Daniel,” she said softly, the confession hanging heavily in the humid night air. “That was the tragic part of all this. When we met, I genuinely believed you saw me for who I am. But it didn't take long to find the ledger entries, the hidden communications, the quiet arrangements you and your mother made to drain my family’s intellectual property to bail out your failing real estate ventures.”
Gasps erupted from the remaining guests who were close enough to overhear. Daniel opened his mouth to deny the accusation, but the sudden buzz of his own smartphone in his breast pocket silenced him instantly. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen flashed a bright red notification from his banking app: Account frozen. All credit lines suspended.
Arthur stepped forward, holding out a digital tablet displaying a detailed financial schematic. “The forensic trail from your personal shell companies in Panama has already been forwarded to the federal prosecutor’s office, Daniel. The submission was authenticated twenty minutes ago.”
Margaret stopped struggling against the guards, her body going entirely rigid. She stared at her son, her voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper. “What did you do, Daniel? What did you drag us into?”
Daniel dropped his phone; it shattered against the stone paving stones, the screen glowing faintly before going completely dark. He fell to his knees in his expensive suit, burying his face in his hands as the reality of their total ruin settled over the estate.
Sophia stepped past them, her wet dress trailing a small puddle of water across the pristine patio as she walked toward the grand double doors. She paused on the threshold, looking back at the shattered family.

“The board meeting isn't tomorrow morning, Margaret,” Sophia said, her voice echoing in the quiet night. “It’s in ten minutes. And I’ve already locked the boardroom doors.”
