Chapter 7

The dining room table was set with immaculate precision, featuring a roast chicken that Evelyn had prepared with silent, punishing efficiency. Richard sat at the head of the table, his grey hair neatly combed, wearing an unbuttoned blue shirt that somehow failed to soften his harsh demeanor. Toby sat quietly between his mother and grandmother, picking at his peas with a plastic fork, sensing the heavy, toxic atmosphere. Clara sat with her hands folded in her lap, her leg brace locked straight under the table. Throughout the meal, nobody spoke. The silence was heavy and deliberate, designed to punish Clara for her conversation with Arthur earlier that morning. Richard finally set his fork down with a sharp clatter against his porcelain plate, clearing his throat to demand absolute attention.

He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, and fixed Clara with a cold, piercing stare. Richard stated in a chillingly calm voice that he had noticed her socializing with the neighbor, reminding her that washing dirty laundry in public was an unforgivable betrayal of the family. He lectured her on how much they sacrificed for her, paying for her medical care, housing her and her ungrateful son, and keeping her safe from a world that would chew up a disabled single mother. Evelyn chimed in, her voice dripping with venom, adding that Clara should be kissing the floor they walked on instead of whining to strangers about discipline. Clara felt a hot surge of anger rise in her chest, replacing the fear that usually paralyzed her. She looked across the table at the two people who had weaponized her tragedy to maintain absolute control over her existence.

Clara took a slow, deliberate breath, channeling the restraint she had practiced for years, but this time she used it to anchor her defiance rather than her submission. She looked Richard squarely in the eye and said quietly that dropping a cake was an accident, not a crime, and that threatening her with a weapon was something she would never accept again. The words dropped into the quiet room like a detonating charge. Richard’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, and he slammed his fist onto the table, causing the silverware to jump. He roared that she was nothing without them, threatening to cut off all support and throw them out into the street. Toby let out a small, terrified gasp and hid his face against Clara’s shoulder. Clara did not flinch; she simply stood up with her crutches, her voice steady as she told them the dinner was over.
