Chapter 12

The final evening under her parents' roof was suffocatingly tense. Richard and Evelyn seemed to sense a subtle shift in the atmosphere, though they could not pinpoint its exact source. During dinner, Richard was unusually quiet, his eyes darting toward Clara with a cold, calculating suspicion. Evelyn picked at her food, occasionally making passive-aggressive remarks about ungrateful children who brought shame upon their lineage. Clara maintained her composure, eating in silence and focusing entirely on Toby, who chattered happily about a cartoon he had watched earlier. She packed her few remaining personal items into a small duffel bag while her parents were downstairs watching television, hiding the bag deep inside her closet behind winter coats. Every creak of the floorboard felt like an alarm bell, and every shadow in the hallway seemed to take on the menacing shape of her father.
Around ten o'clock, Richard knocked sharply on Clara’s bedroom door before pushing it open without waiting for an answer. He stood in the doorway, blocking the exit, his face twisted into an expression of brooding authority. He announced that he had been thinking about her recent behavior and had decided to implement stricter household rules starting tomorrow. He demanded that she surrender her phone so she could no longer communicate with outside influences, and stated that her social outings would be permanently suspended. Clara felt a cold fury spike through her veins. The illusion of negotiation was entirely gone; they viewed her as property, pure and simple. She looked right at him, her voice steady and devoid of its usual tremor, and told him calmly that she would not surrender her phone and that things were going to change very soon.
Richard’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He took a menacing step into the room, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly threat as he reminded her who held all the cards. But Clara did not cower this time. She stood up, leaning firmly on her crutches, her posture tall and unyielding despite her physical limitations. She told him that his reign of intimidation was over. Taken aback by her defiance, Richard hesitated, unsure how to handle a victim who refused to play her assigned role. Before he could raise his voice or summon Evelyn, Clara turned her back on him and walked toward the window, effectively dismissing him from her room. Furious, Richard slammed the door shut behind him, the sound echoing through the quiet house. Clara let out a long, shuddering breath. The battle lines were drawn, and there was no turning back now.
