Chapter 15

The evening shadows lengthened across the Fort Benning courtyard, casting long, peaceful stripes over the wet asphalt where it all had begun weeks earlier. The recruits, now officially graduates and newly assigned privates, gathered around the central flagpole for one final moment of quiet reflection before shipping out to their respective units the following morning.
The air was cool and crisp, carrying the clean scent of autumn and pine. Miller stood near the edge of the paved square, looking down at the dark asphalt surface where he, Elena, and the rest of the squad had pushed through their exhaustion on that first rainy morning. The memories of the burning muscles, the freezing creek crossings, the endless night marches, and the deafening live-fire ranges flashed through his mind, not as a source of trauma, but as the foundation of everything he had become.
Elena walked up beside him, her boots clicking softly against the pavement. She wore her uniform with quiet dignity, her dog tags resting against her collar, clinking a familiar, steady rhythm in the evening breeze.
"You ready for what comes next?" Elena asked, her gray eyes reflecting the fading amber light of the sunset.
Miller looked at her, then over at Davies and the rest of the squad laughing quietly a few yards away. He reached up, touched his own dog tags, and felt the cool, solid metal grounding him completely.

"Yeah," Miller said, a quiet, confident smile touching his lips. "Wherever we go, we go together."
Across the square, Drill Sergeant Vance stood on the steps of the barracks, watching them for a long moment before giving a single, respectful nod. He turned and disappeared inside, leaving the new soldiers standing tall under the fading light, an unbroken chain of strength, honor, and enduring trust that nothing could ever tear apart.
