Chapter 8: The Rumor Mill

Life in Oakhaven moved at the speed of the tides, slow, deliberate, and entirely unbothered by the frantic pace of the metropolis four hundred miles south. Over the next three weeks, Clara established a quiet routine. She walked along the rocky shoreline every morning, feeling the crisp salt air fill her lungs, and spent her afternoons sanding down old floorboards and painting the nursery walls a soft, soothing shade of pale sage green.

The townspeople were cautious around the quiet, elegant pregnant woman who had suddenly moved into the old Miller estate, but their initial suspicion quickly melted into quiet hospitality. Mrs. Gable, the sharp-eyed owner of the Oakhaven General Store, greeted Clara with a warm loaf of cinnamon bread on her third visit, asking no intrusive questions while quietly slipping a jar of homemade blackberry preserves into her basket.

"You're nesting early, dear," Mrs. Gable observed, her gaze dropping to Clara's protruding belly with maternal fondness. "That sea air is good for the constitution, but winters here have teeth. Make sure you stock up on firewood before the first frost."

"I've already ordered a cord from the local timber yard," Clara replied, smiling genuinely as she paid for her provisions. "Thank you for the preserves, Mrs. Gable. It feels very welcoming here."

"Oakhaven takes care of its own," Mrs. Gable said simply, adjusting her spectacles. "Especially those who come looking for a fresh start. We all carry baggage of one kind or another; out here, we just leave it at the shoreline."

Clara walked back to her truck, the afternoon sun warming her shoulders. She felt lighter than she had in years. The constant knot of anxiety that had defined her final months with Julian had dissolved into a quiet, steady rhythm. She was building something real, something rooted in authenticity rather than social pretense.

However, peace in a small town rarely remained undisturbed for long.

As Clara pulled into her driveway, she noticed a sleek, black sedan parked awkwardly near the base of her front steps. It was completely out of place among the weathered pickup trucks and old station wagons of Oakhaven. Her breath caught in her throat, and a cold wave of dread washed over her. She turned off the engine, gripping the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Was it Julian? Had he managed to track her down despite all her precautions?

The driver's door of the sedan swung open, and a tall, slender woman stepped out, smoothing down an expensive wool coat. It wasn't Julian. It was Emma.

Clara sat frozen in her truck for a long moment, watching the older woman walk carefully up the gravel path, clutching her handbag tightly against her orange suit jacket. Emma looked tired, the lines around her eyes etched deeper than they had been on the night of the gala. Slowly, deliberately, Clara pushed open the truck door and stepped out to meet her.
