Chapter 12: The Stranger at the Door

Clara stood up slowly, resting a hand over her rounded belly, her heart beating a steady, cautious rhythm against her ribs. Maya immediately moved to block the doorway to the hallway, her jaw set with protective determination.

"Stay here," Maya whispered, grabbing a heavy iron poker from the side of the stone fireplace.

"No, wait," Clara murmured, walking steadily toward the front entryway. "If it's him, I need to face him myself. Running away won't solve anything if he's tracked me down."

She approached the heavy oak door, listening intently. Outside, the wind howled through the pine trees, driving a thick flurry of snow against the windowpanes. A muffled cough broke through the howling gale, followed by a tentative, exhausted knock. It wasn't the aggressive, demanding pounding of a desperate executive. It sounded weak, hesitant, almost defeated.

Clara unlocked the deadbolt with a sharp click and pulled the door open a few inches, peering out into the swirling blizzard.

Standing on the porch was a man bundled in a heavy, snow-dusted wool coat, his head bowed against the stinging wind. He looked up slowly, the harsh amber porch light illuminating his face. It wasn't Julian.

The man was older, his face lined with deep wrinkles carved by decades of hard labor, weather, and profound grief. His silver-streaked hair was plastered to his forehead by melting snow, and his dark eyes—so hauntingly familiar—fixed on Clara with a look of overwhelming sorrow and hesitant hope.

"Clara?" the man rasped, his voice rough and broken by the freezing air.

Clara caught her breath, stepping back instinctively. She had never met him in person, but she had seen his photograph framed on Julian’s childhood desk, tucked away behind the modern corporate awards. This was Richard. Julian’s estranged father.

"Mr. Vance?" Clara managed to say, her voice trembling slightly with shock. "What on earth are you doing out here in a blizzard? You could freeze to death!"

"I had to see you," Richard said, his teeth chattering slightly as he clutched a worn leather satchel against his chest. "I didn't come on his behalf, Clara. Please, you have to believe that. I came because... because I wanted to apologize for the son I raised, and to see my grandchild before my time runs out."

Maya stepped up beside Clara, lowering the iron poker a fraction of an inch, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. "How did you find her, Mr. Vance? Did Julian send you?"

"Julian doesn't even know I left the city," Richard said earnestly, stepping across the threshold out of the driving snow as Clara instinctively pulled the door open wider. "He's a broken man, yes. But he's not the monster who drove you away. He's just a fool who forgot where he came from—a flaw he inherited from me."
