Chapter 3 - The Secret Folder

Marcus dropped to his knees on the hardwood floor, his fingers hovering inches above the ruined smartphone as if afraid to touch the sharp shards of glass. The dark screen reflected a distorted, broken image of his own face. All the anger that had defined him moments before vanished, replaced by a hollow, sickening terror that made his stomach churn. He didn't care about the game, and he didn't care about the hardware. Inside that phone, hidden deep within a password-protected folder, lay a digital archive that could destroy everything he had worked for over the past six months.
"No, no, no," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling so badly the words were barely audible. He looked up at his father, his eyes wide and glassy with unsphed tears. "You have no idea what you just did. You ruined everything."
David frowned, crossing his arms over his green t-shirt, his initial anger beginning to give way to a flicker of uneasy guilt. He hadn't meant to drop the device; it was an accident born of a heated moment. Yet, seeing his son look so utterly devastated over a piece of consumer electronics only fueled his suspicion.
"It's just a phone, Marcus," David said, his voice softening just a fraction, though still guarded. "We can look into getting it repaired this weekend. Stop acting like the world ended."
"You don't get it!" Marcus yelled, scrambling backward away from his parents until his back hit the sofa. "You never get anything! You just destroy things without asking!"
Maya stepped closer, kneeling beside her son despite the tension radiating from his rigid frame. Her voice was gentle, filled with the deep, enduring patience of a mother who loved her child even when he was impossible to reach.
"Marcus, honey, look at me," Maya said softly, reaching out to touch his shoulder. "Why are you reacting this way over a phone? Is there something else on there? Something you shouldn't have?"
Marcus flinched away from her touch as if burned. He scrambled to his feet, clutching the broken device to his chest like a wounded animal protecting its young. He looked at his mother, then at his father, a dark, desperate panic flashing behind his eyes. Without another word, he bolted toward the hallway, his heavy footsteps pounding against the floorboards as he slammed his bedroom door shut and locked it from the inside.
David stared down the empty hallway, a cold knot forming in his stomach. He looked at Maya, who slowly stood up, her face etched with a deep, unsettling worry. Something wasn't right.

"Go check his desk," Maya whispered, her voice shaking slightly. "There's a spare laptop in the study. If the cloud sync is on, maybe we can access what he's hiding."
