Chapter 2 - The Shattered Screen

The living room seemed to hold its breath. The sudden absence of the game's tinny electronic music left a ringing silence in the air, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. Marcus stared at his empty hands, his mouth slightly open in genuine shock. The defiance that had fueled him seconds ago drained away, replaced by a hot, blinding surge of adolescent rage that made his fingers curl into tight fists against the grey cotton of his sweatpants.
"Give that back!" Marcus shouted, scrambling up from the leather sofa. He lunged forward, his sneakers squeaking sharply against the polished hardwood floor. "You had no right to touch it! Give it back to me right now!"
David didn’t flinch. He held the glowing smartphone high above his head, out of his son's reach, his stern gaze unyielding. Maya hurried out from the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron again, her expression a mix of maternal concern and lingering shock at the sudden escalation.
"David, don't, just let him be," Maya pleaded softly, resting a warm hand on her husband's forearm. "We don't need to break things over a stupid argument."
"It's not about the phone, Maya," David said without breaking eye contact with his son, who was now breathing heavily, glaring up at him with undisguised hatred. "It’s about the attitude. It’s about entitlement. Every single day we bend over backward to give him a life we never had, and this is how he pays us back? By treating his mother like trash?"
"I didn't treat her like trash!" Marcus yelled, his voice cracking slightly with the strain of suppressed emotion. "You guys just micromanage every second of my life! You treat me like a child!"
"Then start acting like a man!" David shouted back, his patience finally snapping. In his frustration, his arm jerked backward, and the phone slipped from his fingers.

Time seemed to slow down. The black smartphone tumbled through the air, spinning end over end before striking the sharp corner of the oak coffee table with a sickening crunch. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of glowing cracks, the display flickering violently once before going completely dark. A stunned silence blanketed the room. Marcus stared down at the ruined device on the floor, his face completely pale, his hands trembling violently as the full reality of what had just happened sank into his chest.
