Chapter 4 - The Federal Shadow

The mention of federal authorities struck the lobby like a physical blow. Julian took an involuntary step back, his sharp facial features twisting in disbelief.

"The FBI?" Julian repeated, his voice rising in panic. "You went to the federal authorities, Elena? Have you lost your mind? That brings down all of us—including you, your assets, your family name!"

Elena didn't blink. The soft lighting of the luxury hotel caught the golden undertones of her dark wavy hair, framing a face carved from absolute determination. "My family name was destroyed the moment you used my father’s trust as collateral for your underground development deals, Julian. I didn't go to the FBI. They came to me."

Clara’s composure finally shattered completely. The chic, untouchable facade vanished, leaving behind a frantic woman whose chest heaved beneath her beige trench coat. She lunged forward, her hand swiping at the flash drive in Elena’s grip.

"Give me that," Clara screamed, her voice losing its restrained cadence. "You don't know what you've done! If the feds have that drive, then Marcus is already compromised!"

Julian caught Clara’s wrist mid-air, his grip iron-tight. "Marcus? What does my former chief legal counsel have to do with federal wire transfers?"

"Everything," a new voice echoed from the shadowed archway of the elevator bank.

All three of them turned. Emerging from the corridor was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a dark overcoat, his silver-streaked hair neatly combed. It was Marcus, holding a leather briefcase and looking entirely too calm for a man whose name had just been invoked in a federal conspiracy.

Marcus walked slowly toward the crystal chandelier, his shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble. He offered a tight, polite nod to Julian, then glanced at Clara with a look of cold professional detachment.

"Good evening, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, ignoring the utter shock on the younger man's face. "I see we’ve reached the stage of the evening where everyone lays their cards on the table. How delightfully messy."

Julian released Clara’s wrist, his hands shaking with a mixture of rage and profound betrayal. "You. You were my lawyer, Marcus. You swore an oath to protect my interests."

"I protected my primary client, Julian," Marcus replied, stopping a few feet away. He pulled a folded document from his overcoat pocket—a certified arrest warrant bearing a federal magistrate's seal. "And right now, my primary client is the United States government."

Clara stumbled backward, her back hitting the gold-trimmed glass display case. The crystal shelf rattled, a row of decorative porcelain figurines teetering on the edge.

"You set us up," Clara whispered, staring at Marcus with horror. "You told me the Geneva proxy was safe."

May you like

"Safety is an illusion, Clara, much like your intelligence," Marcus said without blinking. He turned his gaze to Elena, dipping his head respectfully. "Thank you for cooperating with the initial audit, Mrs. Vance. The sting operation is now fully active."
