Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Mercer

Julian stood beneath the blinding glare of the grand crystal chandelier, his chest rising and falling beneath the fabric of his elegant beige three-piece suit. The gold-trimmed glass displays of the luxury hotel lobby seemed to mock him, reflecting the twisted geometry of a moment he had tried desperately to bury.

"This is ridiculous," Julian snapped, his voice cutting through the polished silence of the foyer with sharp agitation. "The Mercer hotel happened months ago!"

Clara, dressed in her chic beige trench coat over a pristine white top, blinked slowly. She reached out, her fingers brushing the dark fabric of his sleeve with a calculated tenderness.

"How do you know it was the Mercer hotel?" Clara asked, her tone flat, masking a sudden, dangerous realization.

Julian froze, the well-groomed beard framing his tight jawline. The silence stretched, heavy with unspoken accusations.

Clara pulled her hand back, her eyes narrowing slightly as she held his gaze. "I heard it somewhere," she said, her voice dropping an octave, fraught with an uneasy hesitation.

Julian leaned in, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity. "From who?" he demanded, the air between them thinning into pure poison.

A few paces away, Elena stood quietly, her hand resting protectively over her pronounced belly beneath her brown fitted dress and ivory coat. The silence in her posture was louder than any scream. She looked at Julian, her deep eyes filled with a quiet, devastating sorrow.

"You weren't supposed to know," Elena whispered softly, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the distant elevators.

Julian whipped his head toward her, the color draining from his sharp facial features. Elena did not flinch. Instead, she opened the clasp of her leather handbag with a slow, deliberate click and pulled out a heavy manila envelope, sliding it across the marble table toward him.

Julian stared at the envelope, his breath catching in his throat. He reached out trembling fingers, lifting the flap to reveal a stack of photographs timestamped the exact night of the Mercer incident. But as he pulled the top photo out, his blood ran ice cold; it wasn't him in the picture, it was Clara. And she wasn't alone.
