Chapter 13: Confrontation at the Summit

The double doors of the grand council chamber were made of solid mahogany, bound in decorative bronze and etched with the false royal crest of the empire. Faint voices echoed from within—the cold, measured tones of Lord Reginald debating tax allocations with his advisors, while Lady Cassandra maintained a quiet, dominant presence at the head of the long table.
Valerie did not bother knocking. With a powerful, decisive kick of her steel-toed boot, she smashed the mahogany doors inward. They splintered with a deafening crash, swinging wide against the interior walls and sending shockwaves of silence across the lavish chamber.
Lord Reginald leaped to his feet, his face flushing crimson with rage as he knocked his heavy oak chair backward onto the marble floor. "What the meaning of this—Captain Valerie? You were ordered to the eastern frontier!"
Lady Cassandra remained seated, her emerald choker catching the chandelier light. Her expression did not flicker with surprise; instead, a cold, calculating mask settled over her features as she watched Valerie step into the room, followed closely by Julian and the sergeant.
"The eastern frontier was an execution site, Lord Reginald," Valerie said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the expansive chamber, carrying the authority of a commander who answered to a higher truth. "Your mercenaries ambushed my unit, under your direct orders."
"Absurd treasonous lies," Reginald shouted, slamming his fist onto the table. He reached for the ivory-handled ceremonial bell to summon the outer guards. "Guards! Traitors in the chambers! Seize them immediately!"
The doors behind them remained silent. Julian stepped forward, holding up a small brass jamming device he had attached to the chamber's communication conduit. "Your guards aren't coming, Lord Reginald. Their magic-link has been disrupted, and the outer corridor is currently secured by the very soldiers you attempted to murder in the mountain pass."
Cassandra finally spoke, her voice smooth, low, and laced with absolute disdain. "You think walking in here with stolen papers and angry soldiers changes anything, Julian? The people do not want the truth. They want order. They want stability. If they learn the bloodline is a fabrication, the empire will tear itself apart in a week of bloody anarchy."

"Order built on murder and deception is not stability; it's a tyranny waiting to collapse," Julian countered, stepping up to the mahogany table and slamming the ancient chronicler's manuscript down onto the polished wood. "The people are stronger than you think, Cassandra. They survived wars, famines, and plagues. They can handle the truth about their own history."
Reginald drew a heavy jeweled dagger from his belt, his eyes wild with desperate fury. "I will not let a rebellious captain and an arrogant scholar dismantle centuries of rule!"
