Chapter 12: Beneath the Halls of Power

The air in the subterranean tunnels was thick with the scent of damp stone, old mortar, and stagnant water. Torches flickered weakly against the dripping walls, casting long, eerie reflections across the dark runoff channels. Valerie led the column, her hand resting firmly on the hilt of her sword, her senses attuned to every subtle sound echoing through the cavernous stonework.
Julian walked close behind her, holding a brass compass and checking the structural intersections against his map. "We're directly beneath the grand arena now," he whispered softly, his voice barely carrying over the sound of dripping water. "The private access lift is just ahead through that iron maintenance door."
Valerie signaled for the men to halt and spread out defensively along the corridor. She stepped up to the heavy iron door, testing the latch. It was unlocked—an oversight born of arrogance, as the council never expected anyone to breach their subterranean sanctuary. With a gentle push, the door swung open, revealing a vertical shaft illuminated by the faint amber glow of magic-infused conduit stones.
Inside the shaft stood a counterweighted platform elevator designed to carry high-ranking officials directly from the underground vaults to the private chambers of the ruling elite.
"We can't fit all twenty of us on the platform at once," Valerie observed, calculating the weight limits. "It will groan and trigger the seismic alarms if we overload it."
"Then we go in waves," Julian suggested. "You, me, and the sergeant take the first ascent to secure the upper floor. Once we disable the perimeter alarms, the rest of the detachment can follow on the second lift."
Valerie nodded. She stepped onto the metal platform, followed closely by Julian and the veteran sergeant. Julian reached out and pulled the heavy brass lever on the control panel. With a smooth, mechanical whir, the platform began its steady ascent upward, rising silently through the heart of the foundation stones toward the glowing light above.
As they rose, the damp chill of the tunnels gave way to the dry, polished warmth of marble and sandalwood. The muffled sounds of the city outside faded into the absolute quiet of the restricted inner sanctum.

The platform ground to a halt with a soft click. Valerie raised her sword, sliding off the edge into the dimly lit corridor of the council chambers, her eyes scanning for guards. The hallway was empty, framed by heavy velvet tapestries and polished gold sconces.
"We made it," Julian whispered, pulling the chronicler's manuscript from his satchel. "Now, let's go interrupt a meeting."
