Chapter 12 - The Desperate Gamble

The heavy combat boot pinned the edge of Elena’s jacket against the dusty wooden floorboards of the boxcar. A towering guard in tactical gear stood over her, his assault rifle pointed directly down at her face, its barrel radiating heat from the recent gunfire.

"Drop the jewelry, right now, or I blow your head off," the guard barked, pressing the muzzle slightly closer to her forehead.

Elena’s heart hammered frantically against her ribs, but she forced her expression to remain icy and defiant. In her left hand, tightly balled into a fist against the dusty floor, she held the microscopic titanium chip she had just ripped out of the gold clasp. The heavy gold chain and empty casing lay discarded just a few inches away, catching the harsh glare of the overhead floodlights.

From across the boxcar, Marcus and David were pinned down behind a stack of rusted iron crates, both of them breathing heavily as another burst of suppressing fire rattled against the metal siding.

"Leave her alone!" Leo screamed in terror from the corner, bursting into fresh, agonizing tears as he tried to crawl toward Elena.

"Quiet, kid!" the guard snapped, shifting his weight for a fraction of a second to glance toward the boy.

That micro-second of distraction was all Elena needed.

With an explosive burst of adrenaline, Elena slammed her heel backward into the guard's shin, simultaneously driving the compact tactical knife upward in a fierce, blinding arc. The blade sliced cleanly through the heavy tactical nylon of the guard's thigh guard, drawing a sharp howl of pain and surprise from the man.

The guard stumbled backward, his rifle discharging harmlessly into the wooden roof of the boxcar in a deafening roar of fire and smoke.

Elena didn't hesitate. She scrambled across the floor, scooping up the empty gold necklace casing with one hand while keeping her fist clenched tightly around the hidden micro-chip.

"Clara! She's got the necklace!" the wounded guard yelled, clutching his bleeding leg as he collapsed against the sliding door frame.

Julian Vance stepped up to the threshold, his face twisted in absolute fury. He shoved the guard aside, leveling his own sidearm directly at Elena as she pulled herself up beside David and Marcus.

"You absolute fools," Vance hissed, stepping inside the boxcar with his pistol raised. "You think destroying the casing or running away is going to save you? The entire rail yard is surrounded. You are trapped in a dead end."

"We're not trapped, Vance. You are," David said calmly, stepping forward with his hands raised, deliberately drawing Vance's full attention away from Elena.

Vance smirked, cocking his pistol. "Is that right, David? And how do you figure that?"

David nodded subtly toward the overhead rafters behind Vance.

Before Vance could turn around, a deafening explosion ripped through the air outside the boxcar. The entire rail siding shuddered violently as a massive freight crane at the end of the line, manually overridden from the central signal tower, dropped a forty-ton shipping container directly across the main access road, completely crushing the syndicate's escape vehicles and cutting off their reinforcement route.

In the sudden chaos and dust, Marcus grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from the floor and swung it hard against the manual braking lever of the boxcar.

With a loud, protesting screech of iron against iron, the heavy freight car broke free from the stationary line, jolting violently forward as it began to roll down the descending grade toward the main highway crossing.

"Jump!" Marcus roared, grabbing Leo and leaping out the open side door into the thick brush beside the tracks.

May you like

Elena grabbed David by the arm, and together, they threw themselves out of the rolling boxcar just as a hail of bullets from Vance's guards shredded the wooden walls behind them, plunging into the dark, misty night.
