Chapter 1 - The Broken Fence

The splintered wood of the backyard fence still groaned under the sudden impact. Elena’s boots hit the manicured lawn with a fierce, punishing rhythm as she closed the distance between herself and Clara. Her long wavy brown hair whipped across her face, catching the harsh afternoon light, while the gray long-sleeve v-neck shirt clung tightly to her tense frame. There, resting against his damp skin, hung a heavy, glittering gold necklace—an heirloom that should never have been in this yard, let alone around the neck of a terrified child.

Elena stared at the metal, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Where did you get this necklace?" she demanded, her voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper.

Leo looked up, his small frame shaking with silent sobs. A fresh tear carved a clean path through the dirt on his cheek.
