Chapter 6: The Midnight Transfer

The wind howled through the open balcony doors, carrying the sharp, metallic scent of the approaching storm. Julian stood paralyzed in the dark foyer of the hotel suite, Lily heavy and warm against his shoulder. His mind reeled, struggling to assemble the shattered pieces of Clara’s cryptic phone conversation. The transfer of the trust fund clears at midnight. What trust fund? Lily’s medical fund had been set up by Julian’s late father, but Clara was listed as the primary administrator. More terrifying was her final sentence: Julian won't even remember who we are.

What kind of sick threat was that? Was she planning to flee the country with Lily? Was she threatening legal warfare, or something far more sinister?

Julian took a slow, quiet step backward, retreating out into the hallway before Clara could turn around and spot him. He needed to get out of the hotel, find a secure location, and lock down every financial account they shared. But as he reached for the elevator call button, a sharp, metallic click echoed from inside the suite.

The heavy oak door swung shut, locked automatically from the inside.

Julian’s breath hitched. He tried the brass handle; it didn't budge. Clara had locked them out of their own temporary living space, trapping them in the public corridor on the twelfth floor.

“Julian?” A small, sleepy voice murmured against his collar. Lily blinked her heavy eyes open, squinting against the harsh fluorescent lights of the hallway. “Daddy, where are we going? My leg is itchy.”

“Shh, baby, it’s okay,” Julian whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs as he pulled out his phone with his free hand. He tapped furiously on the screen, opening his banking app. The loading circle spun endlessly against the dark background. Connecting to server...

When the dashboard finally populated, Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face. The main family checking account—the one holding the liquid capital from the sale of his architectural firm last year—showed a balance of zero dollars. A pending wire transfer had just cleared at 11:58 PM, routing two million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under a corporate shell name he didn't recognize.

“No, no, no,” Julian muttered under his breath, refreshing the page with a shaking thumb. The money was gone. Every single cent he had worked twenty years to build had vanished into the digital ether in less than sixty seconds.

Suddenly, the elevator bell chimed brightly down the hall.

Julian snapped his head up. The polished metal doors slid open with a soft hum, revealing two men in dark, tailored suits stepping out onto the carpeted floor. They weren't hotel staff. Their posture was too rigid, their eyes scanning the hallway with practiced efficiency.

One of them, a tall man with a severe scar running down his left jawline, locked eyes with Julian immediately.

“Mr. Vance?” the scar-faced man asked, his voice flat and devoid of any warmth. “Mrs. Vance is waiting for you in the lobby. We’re here to escort you and the child downstairs.”
