THE WEIGHT OF GOLD AND WHITE: WHY THE BRACE THAT SAVED HER HEARTS BROKE OUR FAMILY APART

The scar-faced man froze. His gaze locked onto the dark space beneath the metal bed frame, where a tiny patch of light pink fabric was barely visible against the dusty floorboards. A slow, cruel smile crept across his scarred jawline.

“Well, well,” the man murmured softly, stepping around the side of the bed. “Looks like hide-and-seek is over.”

“Don't you touch her!” Julian screamed, thrashing against the leather restraints with such violent desperation that the metal frame of the bed shrieked against the concrete floor. The leather straps bit deep into his wrists, drawing tiny beads of blood, but he didn't feel the pain—only a primal, consuming fury.

The scar-faced man ignored him entirely. He dropped down onto one knee, reaching a gloved hand into the darkness beneath the bed to grab Lily by the arm.

A sharp, piercing scream echoed off the pale green walls as Lily’s tiny fingers scrambled against the floorboards in a desperate attempt to escape.

“Daddy! Help me!” Lily sobbed.

Something inside Julian snapped. A rush of pure, white-hot adrenaline flooded his system, overriding the limits of physical endurance. He didn't just pull against the restraints; he threw his entire body weight sideways, twisting his wrists with a sudden, vicious torque. The old, worn leather strap on his left wrist gave a loud rip, the metal rivet tearing completely through the fabric.

Before the scar-faced man could pull Lily out from beneath the bed, Julian’s freed hand shot out across the tray table. His fingers closed tightly around the heavy, solid-steel surgical tray, swinging it in a wide, sweeping arc with every ounce of remaining strength in his body.

CRACK.

The heavy steel tray struck the side of the scar-faced man’s head with brutal force. The man grunted, his eyes rolling back instantly as his body went limp, collapsing sideways onto the linoleum floor with a heavy, dead thud.
