Chapter 5 - The Stolen Empire

The word bigamist hung in the heavy air of the cathedral like a ticking bomb, echoing off the high stone arches until every single guest heard it clearly. Murmurs exploded into outright pandemonium. Several high-ranking executives stood up from their gold chairs, whispering frantically to one another, while Beatrice’s father—a prominent billionaire seated in the front row—began to turn a dangerous shade of crimson.

Beatrice stared at Julian, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly as her brain struggled to process the catastrophic collapse of her meticulously planned life.

“Julian… tell me she’s lying,” Beatrice pleaded, her voice cracking as she shook his heavy tuxedo arm. “Tell me this scarred witch is just some deranged stalker you paid off to ruin us!”

Julian remained on his knees, his head bowed, his hands resting limply against the cold marble. He didn’t look up. He didn’t deny a single word. His silence was an admission more damning than any confession.

Clara stepped forward, her heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the stone aisle. She stopped just ten feet away from the altar, her piercing eye locked onto Beatrice’s terrified face.

“He didn’t tell you how he made his first million, did he?” Clara asked, her voice dripping with a cold, unforgiving irony. “He didn’t tell you about the insurance payout on a burned-down cabin in the Oregon mountains? Or how he left his wife and his two-year-old daughter to burn alive while he stole the family deeds and ran straight into the arms of the Vance banking dynasty?”

Beatrice stumbled backward, crashing into the altar table and sending a crystal chalice crashing to the floor, where it shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.

“That’s a lie!” Beatrice screamed, tears of absolute rage spilling over her perfectly sculpted eyelashes. “My family ran background checks! He was an eligible bachelor with a clean slate! He told me his family died in an accident!”

“An accident he engineered,” a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the back of the cathedral.

All heads snapped toward the massive oak doors. Stepping out of the shadows of the vestibule was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal suit, flanked by two armed federal marshals in plainclothes. It was Arthur Sterling—Beatrice’s father, and the chairman of Sterling Global Holdings.

Arthur’s face was an expressionless mask of pure, lethal fury as he walked slowly down the central aisle, his heavy leather shoes striking the floor with measured, terrifying precision. He didn't look at his daughter; his predatory gaze was fixed entirely on Julian, who was still kneeling at the base of the altar.

“Dad!” Beatrice cried out, running toward him and grabbing his lapel. “Dad, make them stop! It’s a setup! This is all a sick conspiracy!”

Arthur gently but firmly pushed his daughter aside, stepping past her as if she weren't even there. He walked right up to Clara, nodded respectfully to her, and then turned his cold, calculating eyes down at Julian.

“You’ve been a very busy man, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “You forged property deeds, falsified death certificates, and married my only daughter under false pretenses, effectively committing fraud on a scale that will keep you in a maximum-security prison until the day you die.”

Julian slowly raised his head, his face pale and hollow, his eyes hollowed out by absolute defeat.

“Arthur… please, let me explain—” Julian started, his voice trembling.

“Save it for the judge,” Arthur interrupted coldly. He turned to the two federal marshals standing behind him, gesturing sharply toward the kneeling groom. “Arrest him. Charge him with arson, bigamist fraud, and corporate embezzlement.”

As the marshals stepped forward and grabbed Julian by his expensive tuxedo shoulders, yanking him roughly to his feet, Clara stepped forward and snatched the silver crest pendant back from little Lily’s hand, holding it up like a badge of judgment.

Before the marshals could haul Julian away toward the heavy doors, little Lily stepped directly into his path, looked up into his tear-filled eyes, and whispered something that made Julian’s heart stop entirely.
