Chapter 1 - The Wedding Interruption

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s Cathedral swung inward with a deafening groan, cutting through the heavy organ music and the polished murmur of three hundred elite guests.
Ten-year-old Lily stood on the marble threshold, her pale cardigan trembling against a stained light blue dress. Her face was streaked with drying tears, her breathing coming in ragged, desperate gasps. Cradled tightly in her small arms was a seven-month-old infant wrapped in a fraying pink blanket.
As the entire assembly turned in stunned unison, Lily’s voice pierced the sacred silence, cracking with raw, unfiltered desperation.
“Daddy!”
Thirty-five-year-old Julian Vance froze at the altar, his crisp black tuxedo suddenly feeling like a straitjacket. He turned slowly, his face draining of all color as panic seized his throat. Beside him, Beatrice Vance, breathtaking in her white lace gown and cathedral veil, stared at the children in sheer horror.
Beatrice’s manicured fingernails dug into her bouquet. Her voice dropped into a venomous hiss that carried across the hushed sanctuary.
“What is the meaning of this? Who let these street rats in here?”
“They’re not street rats,” Julian choked out, his voice barely a whisper as he took an involuntary step off the altar platform.
“Get them out of here!” Beatrice screamed, her porcelain mask shattering entirely as she lunged forward with surprising violence, her white satin shoes clicking aggressively against the stone as she moved to shove Lily backward.
Julian intercepted her instantly, his broad frame blocking his new bride with a fierce, protective snarl.
“Don’t you dare touch her, Beatrice!” Julian ordered, his eyes wide and wild.
Lily’s trembling fingers reached into the neckline of her dress, pulling free a heavy silver family crest pendant necklace that flashed under the grand chandeliers. Julian staggered back, his pupils dilating in pure terror as he stared at the metalwork.
“This is my family’s crest,” Julian whispered, the color draining entirely from his face.

Beatrice stared at the pendant, her breath catching as the heavy oak doors suddenly slammed shut behind them with a resounding, thunderous echo.
