Chapter 7 - The Terrace Escape

Eleanor rushed past Arthur, ignoring the fixer’s warning snarl as she threw herself against the heavy French doors, unlocking the latch and pulling them wide open. The freezing winter wind rushed into the study, carrying sheets of stinging rain and the desperate, sobbing gasps of the young child. The child collapsed across the threshold, shivering violently, her skin blue with cold, clutching her empty hands where the gold locket had once been.

“They… they took it back,” the child choked out between violent shivers, curling into a tight ball on the Persian rug. “The bad man in the car… he took my mother’s picture.”

Eleanor dropped to her knees, stripping off her own heavy cashmere shawl and wrapping it tightly around the trembling child’s frail shoulders.

“You’re safe now, I have you,” Eleanor murmured fiercely, her voice thick with unshed tears. She looked up at Arthur, who stood leaning on his cane near the doorway, watching the scene with a cold, detached curiosity. “You monster. You set this up. You let Julian hand her over to Marcus just to lure us out.”

Arthur didn't flinch. He simply adjusted his grip on the silver-handled cane and took a slow step toward them.

“Marcus isn't the monster here, Eleanor—he’s just a desperate man drowning in a storm of his own making,” Arthur said quietly, his tone devoid of malice, carrying instead a strange, unsettling weight of warning. “The real danger isn't in this room, and it isn't Marcus. If federal agents trace that locket to the offshore accounts hidden in this very wing, everyone connected to the Vance name will be dragged down into the federal inquiry. Including you.”

“I don't care about money, Arthur!” Eleanor shouted, her voice ringing with absolute defiance as she stood up, placing herself squarely between the fixer and her granddaughter. “My daughter is gone, and this child is all I have left of her. I will burn this entire empire to the ground before I let you or Marcus touch her again.”

Arthur stared at Eleanor for a long, tense moment, studying the fierce, unyielding glint in her eyes. Slowly, a strange, grim smile touched the corners of his weathered mouth. He reached inside his heavy trench coat, pulling out a plain, sealed manila envelope, and dropped it onto the mahogany desk behind him.

“Then you’re going to need more than an emerald dress and a stubborn attitude to survive what’s coming,” Arthur said softly, turning toward the open French doors and stepping back out into the freezing rain. “Open that envelope before midnight. That’s when the board meeting reconvenes, and Julian votes to strip you of your guardianship permanently.”

Eleanor watched Arthur disappear into the stormy darkness of the terrace. With trembling hands, she locked the doors, turned back to the terrified child on the floor, and slowly walked over to the desk to pick up the mysterious envelope.
