Chapter 6 - The Voice in the Dark

Eleanor’s hand hovered over the brass switch as the cold air from the hallway chilled the nape of her neck. She turned around slowly, her eyes straining against the absolute darkness of the study. The silhouette of a tall, broad-shouldered man leaned heavily against the wooden doorframe, blocking her only exit. The rhythmic tap of a cane against the hardwood floor echoed in the suffocating silence.

“Who is there?” Eleanor demanded, her voice carrying a sharp edge of command despite the racing terror in her chest. “Show yourself immediately.”

A low, gravelly chuckle reverberated through the room. A hand reached out, flicking the wall switch with casual familiarity. The warm glow of the antique chandelier illuminated the study, revealing the scarred, weathered face of a man Eleanor had not seen in a quarter of a century. It was Arthur Thorne, Marcus Sterling’s former enforcer and the shadowy fixer who had helped orchestrate the cover-up of Sarah’s initial flight from the estate. Arthur’s face was lined with deep wrinkles, his gray hair cropped short, and his dark trench coat damp from the freezing rain outside. He leaned heavily on an ebony cane with a silver wolf-head handle, looking at Eleanor with an unnerving, predatory amusement.

“It has been a long time, Mrs. Vance,” Arthur said smoothly, stepping fully into the warm light and closing the study door behind him with a heavy thud. “You certainly haven’t lost your sharp tongue, even if your judgment is clearly slipping.”

“You have no right to be in this house, Arthur,” Eleanor said, standing her ground near the mahogany desk, her hands gripping the edge of wood to steady her shaking knees. “You and Marcus were driven out of our lives twenty-five years ago. If you take one more step, I will have the guards—”

“The guards?” Arthur interrupted with a harsh, barking laugh, cutting her off mid-sentence. “Whose guards, Eleanor? Julian’s security detail? Or the men currently packing up Marcus’s private estate across town because the federal tax evasion warrants finally cleared this morning?”

Eleanor’s eyes widened in shock. The pieces of the puzzle began shifting rapidly in her mind.

“Federal warrants?” she whispered, staring at the fixer in disbelief.

“Marcus spent twenty years burning through Sarah’s trust fund, laundering money through shell corporations, and when the money ran dry, he started looking for the missing link,” Arthur explained, stepping closer, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “And that link just walked right through your front doors tonight, holding the one piece of evidence that connects the offshore accounts directly to your granddaughter.”

Before Eleanor could process the magnitude of Arthur’s words, a sharp, frantic tapping echoed against the study’s reinforced French doors leading out to the private terrace. Eleanor gasped, spinning around just as a small, mud-stained hand slammed against the glass from the outside, begging for help in the freezing storm.
