Chapter 14: The Wall Breaks

The reinforced glass of the two-way mirror shattered with an explosive crash, sounding like a gunshot in the confined basement corridor. Thousands of gallons of crystal-clear pool water burst through the opening in a violent, foaming torrent, sweeping away the desk, the rotary phone, and the metal stools as if they were made of paper.
"Get back!" Clara screamed, grabbing Elena by the arm and dragging her away from the rushing wave just as it flooded the hallway, rising past their knees in a matter of seconds.
David lunged forward, grabbing Arthur by the collar of his suit jacket and slamming him against the elevator wall before the lawyer could press the red button on the remote. The remote slipped from Arthur's fingers, splashing down into the swirling water and sinking instantly out of sight.
"Where is the master key to the vault?" David demanded, pressing his forearm against Arthur's throat while the freezing water swirled around their waists. "Where did you hide the physical records?"
Arthur choked, coughing up water as he clawed at David's wrists, a desperate look finally breaking through his professional facade. "In... in the penthouse... the wall safe behind the portrait... it's already set to self-destruct!"
Clara stood in the center of the flooded corridor, holding the heavy metal box tightly against her chest. The water was waist-high now, perfectly clear under the emergency lights, reflecting the tragic history of a family built on lies, betrayal, and unyielding ambition. She looked down at the engraved initials S.S.—the same initials shared by her mother and her father, a shared brand of guilt that she had finally inherited.
"We aren't going to the penthouse," Clara said quietly, her voice cutting through the roar of the draining pool above them.
Elena wiped wet hair from her eyes, shivering violently. "Then where do we go, Clara? The whole building is flooding."
Clara looked at the open service elevator doors, then straight into Arthur's terrified eyes. "We take the service elevator straight to the ground-floor lobby, and we open this box in front of the emergency responders who are already outside."
David let go of Arthur, panting heavily as he looked at Clara with a mixture of shock and deep, abiding respect. "The gates... the police are outside?"

Clara nodded slowly, a faint, resolute smile touching her lips as the water around them finally began to recede into the main drainage system. "I called them the moment I saw the security camera blinking in the pool area. My father didn't outsmart us. He just ran out of time."
Arthur slumped against the elevator wall, defeated. But as Clara stepped toward the open car with the heavy metal box in her arms, the emergency lights in the ceiling suddenly flickered off completely, plunging the entire hallway into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
