Chapter 13: The Remote Control

The small, polished remote control in Arthur Pendelton’s hand caught the flickering emergency light, gleaming with an ominous metallic sheen. The water continued to lap against the base of the elevator doors, swirling around the lawyer’s polished leather shoes as if the complex itself were slowly sinking beneath the weight of its own secrets.

"Put the box down, Ms. Sterling," Arthur instructed, his tone entirely devoid of emotion, like a judge reading a mandatory sentence. "Your father passed away ten minutes ago in the penthouse. The legal transfer is complete. As of right now, this entire apartment complex—and every liability attached to it—belongs to you."

Clara stared at the heavy metal box in her arms, the engraved initials S.S. glistening under the harsh light. She didn't drop it. Instead, she took a deliberate step forward out of the flooded utility room, splashing water onto the concrete corridor.

"If he's dead," Clara said, her voice steady and sharp, "then there's no one left to protect the lie. What is actually inside this box, Arthur? Is it my mother's innocence, or is it the proof that you've been running his accounts since the day he vanished?"

Arthur’s calm exterior flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine panic that he quickly masked behind a tight, thin smile. "You overestimate your father's sentimentality, my dear. He didn't keep secrets to protect your mother. He kept them to ensure that no matter what happened, his legacy would survive through you."

David stepped out of the water, grabbing Clara’s arm. "Don't listen to him, Clara. If you open that box here, on this property, the sensor inside will transmit the encryption key to the federal treasury. We'll all be indicted as accessories to thirty years of financial fraud."

"Let them indict us," Elena shouted, finally stepping down from the stool and wading through the ankle-deep hallway water. She walked right up to Arthur, her face inches from his. "You think I'm going to let you walk away with the keys to a criminal empire after what you put us through today? I want every single file, Pendelton. Now."

Arthur looked down at Elena with a cold, pitying gaze. Slowly, his thumb hovered over the red button on the remote control. "You really think this is about money, don't you? Look behind you."

Clara and David spun around toward the open doorway of the filter room. The two-way mirror, already heavily cracked, finally gave way under the massive water pressure behind it.
