Chapter 5 - The Bloodstained Handkerchief

The bright beam of the flashlight illuminated the small, suspicious bundle tucked deep between the worn cushions of the living room sofa. Officer Vance motioned for the rookie to stay back with Clara and Elena, stepping carefully into the darkened room with his hand resting near his weapon. He used the edge of his notepad to gently push aside the fabric of the sofa cushion, revealing the bloodstained handkerchief.

Arthur watched from the doorway, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. He gripped the wooden doorframe so hard his knuckles turned blue.

"Don't touch that," Arthur warned, his voice straining. "You don't know what you're opening."

Vance ignored him. Using a pair of latex tweezers from his utility belt, he carefully lifted the handkerchief. Inside was a heavy, silver-plated pocket watch with a cracked crystal face. The hands of the watch were permanently frozen at 3:14. Vance turned it over, shining his light on the engraved initials on the back: E.M.

Elena gasped, pressing her hands tightly over her mouth. Tears streamed freely down her cheeks, washing away the dust from the ruined memorial.

"That... that was my grandfather's watch," Elena whispered, looking at Arthur with sheer betrayal. "You told us it was stolen during the burglary twenty years ago. You said the house was broken into and everything of value was gone."

Arthur closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the doorframe. He looked older than his sixty-five years, defeated and hollowed out.

"The house wasn't burglarized, Elena," Arthur confessed quietly, the admission hanging heavily in the tense air. "There was no break-in."

Clara let out a harsh, bitter laugh, breaking free from the rookie officer's grip and stepping up onto the porch. She pointed a shaking finger at Arthur’s chest.

"He staged the whole thing!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing down the quiet suburban street. "He murdered my father in that very room, stole his watch, hid the body under the floorboards of the guest house, and then married my mother to get his hands on the rest of the estate!"

The neighborhood was dead silent. Several neighbors had gathered near the sidewalk across the street, watching the unfolding drama with wide eyes and open mouths. Officer Vance slowly stood up, placing the pocket watch into an evidence bag. He looked at Arthur with absolute severity.

"Arthur, you need to come with me down to the station right now," Vance said, unlatching his handcuffs. "You are being detained for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Edward Miller in 1994."

Arthur didn't resist. He didn't run. He simply held out his wrists, letting the cold steel cuffs snap into place around his aging bones.

As Vance led him down the steps toward the cruiser, Arthur turned his head just enough to look at Clara.

"You think finding the watch changes anything?" Arthur whispered darkly, a strange, grim smile touching his lips. "Check the attic before you celebrate, Clara. Your mother left something up there for you, too."
