Chapter 2 - Sirens on the Asphalt

The heavy crunch of police cruiser tires pulling up to the curb broke the tense silence that had momentarily settled over the ruined lawn. Officer Vance, a weathered cop with a permanent scowl, stepped out first, followed by a younger rookie holding a clipboard. Vance adjusted his cap, taking in the bizarre scene: the shattered glass, the soaked mourners, Arthur standing dripping wet in his expensive suit, Elena kneeling on the grass with bleeding hands, and Clara standing defiantly in her sparkly yellow dress holding the pulsing garden hose like a weapon.

"All right, what is going on here?" Vance called out, resting his hand casually on his holster as he walked up the paved driveway. "We got a call about a disturbance and property damage at a private residence."

Elena scrambled to her feet, leaving bloody smudges on the fabric of her black dress. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Clara, who finally lowered the hose a few inches, though the water continued to pool around her high heels.

"Officer, arrest her," Elena demanded, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "She vandalized our mother’s memorial service. She destroyed family heirlooms, broke glass everywhere, and threatened us."

Clara scoffed, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder with an air of arrogant dismissal. She didn't drop the hose. Instead, she pointed it toward the street, letting a weak stream spill onto the pavement.

"Your mother?" Clara retorted, her tone dripping with venom. "That woman was a thief, and this house was stolen from my father thirty years ago. I am just taking back what was rightfully ours before you bloodsuckers could bury her and sweep the truth under the rug."

Arthur stepped forward, positioning himself between the police officer and Clara. His face was pale, lined with the deep exhaustion of a man guarding a catastrophic secret. He looked at Officer Vance with tired authority.

"Officer Vance, I suggest you ask this woman to put the hose down and step away from the property immediately. She is trespassing," Arthur said firmly.

Vance looked between Clara and Arthur, recognizing both of them from previous neighborhood disputes. He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Clara, put the hose down right now. Let's not make this harder than it needs to be," Vance instructed, taking a cautious step forward.

Clara smiled, a slow, chilling grin that didn't reach her eyes. She loosened her grip on the brass nozzle, letting it drop into the mud with a dull thud. Water hissed from a small leak in the spigot near the foundation.

"I'll put the hose down, Officer, but I'm not leaving," Clara whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear. "Because if you step inside that house right now, you'll find out why my father really died."
