Chapter 3 - The Web of Influence

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered once, casting a harsh, cold shadow across Eleanor Vance’s meticulously sculpted face. She did not flinch under Officer Miller’s direct, accusatory gaze. Instead, a thin, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of her lips.
“Officer Miller, I suggest you watch your tone,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a low, controlled register that commanded authority. “My family name carries weight in this city, and baseless accusations from a frantic, unemployed father will not hold up against court-ordered guardianship.”
Mark stepped forward, ignoring the physical pain in his knuckles from where he had shoved her earlier. He pointed a trembling finger at the maroon blazer.
“You drugged my daughter,” Mark accused, his voice thick with a rage so profound it bordered on terrifying. “You and your lawyers planned this entire thing. You wanted her away from me because I found the financial records.”
Officer Miller held up a hand, silencing Mark with a sharp gesture. She looked down at the legal custody paperwork sealed inside the plastic evidence bag. The signature at the bottom belonged to Judge Thomas Sterling—a man widely known in legal circles for his close personal ties to the Vance family estate.
“Financial records, Mr. Hayes?” Officer Miller asked, her eyes darting back to Mark. “What kind of records?”
Lily whimpered from the bed, curling her knees up toward her chest beneath the pink hospital gown. She tapped the screen of the smartwatch, and a secondary audio file began to play softly through the tiny speaker. The clear, unmistakable voice of Eleanor filled the sterile room, echoing off the tile walls.
“If you tell your father about the papers in my safe, Lily, the next time won't just make you sleepy. Understand?”
Eleanor’s facade finally cracked. A micro-twitch betrayed the absolute panic surging beneath her expensive clothing. She took another step toward the door, her hand still buried deep inside her blazer pocket.
“That audio is fabricated—tampered with by a desperate man trying to maintain custody after a violent outburst,” Eleanor spat out, her voice rising in defensive panic. She turned her heel, making a decisive move toward the exit.
“Stop right there, Mrs. Vance! You are not leaving this room,” Officer Miller commanded, finally drawing the metal handcuffs completely off her belt. The metallic click of the ratchets echoed sharply in the quiet room.
Mark moved instinctively to block the doorway, his broad frame cutting off Eleanor’s escape route. He towered over her, his chest heaving with restrained fury. He knew the stakes. This wasn't just a bitter family dispute over custody; it was a desperate battle for his daughter’s very survival against a woman who considered human lives to be mere disposable assets on a balance sheet.
“You’re not walking out of here to cover up what you did to my wife, and what you’re trying to do to my little girl,” Mark growled, his eyes locked onto Eleanor’s trapped, darting gaze.
Eleanor’s hand suddenly whipped out of her blazer pocket. In her grip was a sleek, encrypted satellite phone. Before Officer Miller could lunge forward to intercept her, Eleanor pressed a single red emergency button on the device’s screen.

A chillingly calm automated voice echoed from the tiny speaker in Eleanor’s hand: “Protocol Omega initiated. All local medical records synchronization is now permanently locked.”
