Chapter 2 - The Missing Dose

The sterile beep of the heart monitor filled the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. Officer Miller froze, her hand still resting on the cold steel of the handcuffs dangling from her belt. She glanced between Mark, whose face had gone completely pale, and Eleanor, who was casually smoothing the lapels of her maroon blazer.

“What injector are you talking about, Mr. Hayes?” Officer Miller demanded, her professional tone sharpening as she took a half-step closer to the bed.

Mark ignored the officer completely. He pressed the phone tighter against his ear, his breathing ragged and shallow. On the other end of the line, the distant voice of Dr. Evans sounded muffled and frantic. Mark’s eyes darted frantically around the room before landing on the clear plastic evidence bag containing the custody paperwork.

“Answer me, Doctor! Was there any trace of it in her system?” Mark pleaded, his voice cracking under the weight of an unbearable terror.

Eleanor’s face flickered with a micro-expression of pure panic before she quickly masked it with her usual icy composure. She stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor.

“Officer, arrest this violent man immediately,” Eleanor commanded, pointing a manicured finger directly at Mark’s chest. “He is clearly unstable, hallucinating, and dangerous. Look what he just did to me! He belongs in a cell, not beside a recovering child.”

Officer Miller hesitated. The heavy legal paperwork rustled inside the plastic evidence bag she held. The emergency custody order authorized her to remove Lily from Mark’s care, but the mention of an unknown medical device—an injector—complicated the entire investigation.

Lily clutched the smartwatch tighter against her pink hospital gown. Her blue eyes welled up with fresh tears, though she made no sound. She looked up at her father with absolute trust, completely unaware of the massive legal and medical storm swirling around her bed.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioner. “My arm still burns where Grandma poked me.”

Mark’s head snapped toward his daughter. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking ghost-white. He dropped his phone, the device clattering loudly against the floor tiles before the call could disconnect. Dr. Evans’ voice echoed faintly from the speaker on the floor: “Mr. Hayes, the lab results just came back positive. It’s heavy sedation medication…”

Officer Miller finally reacted to the doctor’s muffled words. She dropped her hand away from the handcuffs and instead reached down to pick up the fallen smartphone. Her eyes narrowed as she stared at the glowing screen, reading the incoming caller ID and the string of urgent text messages flashing on the display.

“Mrs. Vance,” Officer Miller said slowly, turning her sharp gaze toward the older woman in the maroon blazer. “Care to explain why a hospitalized child has unprescribed sedatives in her blood, and why your attorney filed for emergency custody ten minutes before the lab work was even ordered?”

Eleanor took a deliberate step backward, her hand sliding quietly into the deep pocket of her blazer, her fingers brushing against a heavy, concealed object.
